Windham – Windham Schools are moving forward with plans to open in the fall. Now, just because the district is being pro-active in getting the building ready for students, it remains to be seen if they are, indeed, returning to the classroom. Everything is in the hands of the governor and the health department.

The district is moving toward making all toilets, touchless flushing. They are also working on making all handwashing facilities touchless, including paper towel dispensers. They will also space out lockers throughout the building. They are stepping up their cleaning regimen and are still working out details on transportation, cafeteria usage and other important issues having to do with opening the school. The district also has to have a contingency plan, in case classes don’t resume or if there is another interruption in the regular schooling of students. All these changes are not cheap but the cost will not come from the district’s general fund. These changes will come from the CareFund set up by the government for entities that had to spend extra money due to COVID 19.

At the most recent board of education meeting, the board approved the hiring of a treasurer, Adam Hines who is replacing the interim treasure Jason Norris. Norris was hired in March as interim treasurer, when Samantha Pochedly left. Hines was awarded a three-year and one-month contract effective July 1, 2020 – July 31,2023. Superintendent Aireane Curtis welcomed Hines by presenting him with Windham Bomber gear. Hines will also fill the role of director of food services.

The board approved the hiring of Pat Vicich as head cook, beginning August 2020. They also approved a three-year administrator contract for Jake Eye beginning July 1, 2020 thru July 31, 2023. They awarded supplemental contracts to the following: Daniel Gross, athletic director, Jake Eye, varsity head football coach, Eliot Pennell, varsity head golf coach, Lauren Gintert, varsity head volleyball coach, Jerry Kiser, junior high head football coach, Regan Weiss, junior high head volleyball coach and Andrew Stamp, marching /summer band director.

In other board actions, they approved the purchase of a new lawn mower and approved the disposal of unused equipment, method of disposal to be determined at a later date. Lastly, they accepted monetary donations from various sources in the community for the school food pantry.
