Windham – Windham High School sophomore US History students recently had the opportunity to take part in a trip to the Ohio State House. The trip was made possible by a grant from the Capitol Square Foundation with funding by Honda of American and Wal-Mart.
Over twenty students took the three hour trip to Columbus to spend the day sharing the halls with lawmakers from throughout Ohio. Students had the opportunity to meet with aides from Windham area Ohio Senator John Eklund’s office as well as from the office of Ohio House of Representative Matt Lynch’s office. State Senator Capri Cafaro from the neighboring 32nd Ohio Senate district also talked with the students during their visit.
Students were permitted to go on the Senate Floor and visit the House of Representatives gallery. A docent from the Ohio State House shared with the students that Abraham Lincoln most likely found out he won the presidency in 1860 while in the Ohio State House. Notable artwork and architecture were also highlights of the visit. Students and staff in attendance agreed that getting the opportunity to be in a building where our state laws are made and is part of history is a great complement to what is happening in the classroom.
