Mantua Community Center

 Every Tuesday

The Community Center at Mantua Center has reopened in the cafeteria wing of the Mantua Center School, just N. of SR 82 on Mantua Center Rd.   We are open Tuesdays only, from 9-3, and again from 5-7, free and open to all (children must be supervised).  Coffee and tea are available all day, and we share a potluck lunch at noon.  Anyone interested is invited to bring appropriate supplies to join the watercolor group at 9:30, or a sewing project almost anytime.  These are not formal classes, but members help one another if needed.  Some come just to chat, or to help assemble a jigsaw puzzle.  Playing cards and board games are available.  There will be special programs from time to time.  The 5:30 evening meal is called “Don’t Eat Alone Supper,” with a special invitation to anyone who eats way too many meals without companionship.  No need to bring anything but yourself for that one.  Contact Ellie Monroe, by phone at 330-274-0711 or at efoster@config.com to be put on a list for email updates.

Water Dog Swim Lessons

Begin March 29

Need swim lessons? Well look no further than Hiram College.  This will be our final session of Water Dog Swim Lessons for the semester.  Take advantage of this amazing opportunity to have your child learn a valuable life lesson.  Get instruction from the colleges finest once a week for a four week period.  Each lesson lasts forty-five minutes with an additional fifteen minutes for your child to gain more confidence in the water.    Ages four and up welcomed.  Sign up online at www.hiramterriers.com/sports/swimdive/swimlessons.  Lesson times are from 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, and 5-6pm Sunday afternoons on March 29, April 12, 26, May 3, and 10.  Cost is fifty dollars.  For more information, please contact Brian O’Neill at 330.569.5343.

NGCC Food Donations

State Farm Agent, Shannan Jursa’s office now has a bin for drops offs to support the Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard.   We will donate $10 to the Community Cupboard for every 10# of food donated.   For now, we plan to have the bin in our office through March.  Office located at 8454 Windham St., Garrettsville, OH 44231

Pancake Breakfasts

Sundays in March

The Geauga County Historical Society will hold its annual Pancake Breakfasts on the five Sundays of March 2015, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Meals served in the Lennah Bond Activities Center on the grounds of Century Village Museum.  All-you-can-eat pancakes served with maple syrup produced from our own sugar bush.   Adults $7.00, children 5-12 $5.00, children 4 and under free.

Fish Fry Fridays

Fried fish, French fries, coleslaw and beverages will be served from 4:30 – 7pm at the Parkman Community House (16295 Main Market/St. Rt. 422 – 1/4 mile east of St. Rt. 528 in Parkman).  Adult dinners are $9.00 (Dine-in or take-out).  Desserts will be available for an additional donation.  (An alternate kid-friendly dinner will also be available for $5.00 each.)  Sponsored alternately by Parkman Boy Scout Troop 76 and Huskies’ Touchdown Club.

Eagles Fish Fry

The Garrettsville Eagles are holding Friday fish fry throughout Lent. Dinners are a choice of fish, shrimp, chicken or a fish/shrimp combo. Meals are served with baked potato or French fries, coleslaw or applesauce, green beans, roll and butter. All meals are $9.00. Carryout is available by calling 330-527-2330. Open to the public.

Craft & Collectible Show

There will be a Craft and Collectible Show at the Portage County Gardeners 5154 S. Prospect St. Ravenna, Ohio 44266 (Rootstown area) on March 21st from 9-3. There will be local crafters and artisans selling a variety of handcrafted items, delicious food and baked goods, raffles and more. Spaghetti Dinner

Spaghetti and meatball dinner will be March 21st from 4-6pm at the Western Reserve Masonic Lodge 507, 216 E. Main St., West Farmington, OH. Dinner will include spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, pie, coffee and lemonade. Cost is $7 for adults, $4.50 for kids age 5-12 and free for kids 5 and under.

JAG Kindergarten Registration

Please call the James A. Garfield Elementary school to set up an appointment to register your child for Kindergarten.  The age requirement for the JAG School district is 5 years of age by Sept 30, 2015.  Registration and full screenings will take place on March 24, March 25 and March 26, 2015 at the Elementary School, these are the ONLY times we will do complete screenings.  Class lists will be finalized in May, so it is imperative that we have your child registered!   Please call the Elementary School office at 330-527-2184 for an appointment.  It is required that you bring in your child for this appointment.

The Department of Religious Studies at Hiram College will welcome Thomas J..J. Altizer, Ph.D. as featured speaker at the College’s 31st Seminar for Religious Leaders on March 26, 2015. His presentation, “Buddha and God,” will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Kennedy Center, located on the Hiram College campus.. Religious leaders, scholars, students and those interested in the study of religions are invited to attend the free lecture. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture.

Rummage Sale

Crestwood High School will be having a rummage sale March 27th from 9-5. The money raised goes towards Junior/Senior prom expenses in the future. CHS is accepting donations currently from 7-3 during the day and they are needed ASAP.

Easter Egg Hunt

The 62nd annual Newton Falls Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Newton Falls Girl Scouts will be March 28th at 1pm at the community center basketball courts. The event is for ages 2 through 10. The Easter Bunny will visit along with her friend Shelley the Good Egg. There will be 8000 eggs placed, all with prizes. Night at the Races

The JAG All Sports Boosters are hosting a Night at the Races on 3/28 at the Elks Club in Ravenna. Tickets are $30 apiece or $50 a couple. Dinner and 2 drinks are included. There will be side boards, over 100 raffle items and a cash bar in addition to  the races. Horses are available for $20.00. Oink & Squeal

Burton American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #459 presents their Annual Oink & Squeal Chinese auction and turkey raffle at the Burton American Legion Hall, 14052 Goodwin St., Burton, OH will be March 28th. Doors open at 5pm with the raffle beginning at 7pm. 1st place prize is $200, 2nd prize is $150 and 3rd prize is $75, along with 15 hams being given away. Raffle tickets are $2 each, Chinese auction tickets are 8 for $1. Admission is a non-perishable food, bath, personal hygiene item or cash donation to a local food bank. Refreshments will be available through the Legion kitchen. All proceeds will fund our Scholarship Program and Girls State Sponsorships.

Easter Egg Hunt

Burton Village Easter Egg Hunt will be April 4th at 11am in the park on the south end of the square. Children age 1 through 6 are eligible to participate and are divided into three age groups; one-two, three-four and five-six. Be sure to bring a basket or bag for your goodies! Each age group receives  thirty prize eggs and a special marked egg that represents a grand prize. The Easter Bunny will hop into the park and be available for pictures, remember your cameras!

“Straight On” Performance

The Windham Bomber Band presents “Straight On”, a  Heart tribute band performing a concert fundraiser for our 2016 Disney trip on April 11th at 7pm at Windham High School. Concessions will be available.  Tickets are pre-sale through the Windham Bomber Band for $10 apiece.

Make Your Own Fairy Garden

Fairy gardens are becoming increasingly popular, perhaps because these lovely miniatures are so individual and such fun.  Join us and spend a few hours in the world of whimsical miniature landscapes.  You’ll learn about Fairy Gardens and create your own. Young at Heart  Trip
