Scholarship Offer

Chiropractic Center of Garrettsville is happy to announce that they will be offering a scholarship to senior athletes at James A. Garfield High School for the sixth year. The scholarship will be for $850.00. It may be used as the student needs. Applications are available at the chiropractic office or through the school counselor.

Spring Bird Walks

Dust off those binoculars and fine tune your hearing to see, hear and learn about the spring migrants and arriving residents of the feathered kind. The Hiram College JH Barrow Field Station will once again play host to this series of Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland bird walks which begin at 7:30am. Join local naturalist Eric Faber and other birding enthusiasts at 7:30am for a casual walk around the Field Station. These hikes are for beginners and experts alike. Pittsburgh Pastel Artist League

An exhibit by the Pittsburgh Pastel Artist League will be on display at the Trumbull Art Gallery until May 31.  The League was formed in 2002, and is comprised of members from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.  The paintings can be seen Tue-Sat from noon to 4 pm in our Main Gallery.  Admission is free.

Special Arbor Day Ceremony

This year, on Arbor Day, April 26, the Mantua Village Garden club will hold a special memorial ceremony for a former,  long time club member, Sally Brugmann, and plants a tree, in her honor, on the Mantua Memorial Walkway.  The Memorial Walkway is located in front of Crestwood High School, and was started by the club in the early 60’s, to honor Garden Club & community members, by planting a tree in their honor.  From novice to master gardener – if you love plants, flowers, and nature in general, the Mantua Village Garden club would love to have you as a new member.  For more information, call Diane Lottig 330-274-2868, or Lea Lazar 330-274-0614.

Newton Falls Kiwanis Club’s Annual Steak Dinner

The Newton Falls Kiwanis Club will hold their annual Steak Cookout on Apr 27, at the Newton Falls Community Center on Quarry Street. The meal includes a 14-ounce sirloin steak, on the grill, cooked as you wish, salad, potato, drink, and dessert, all for $15.00. Pork Chop Dinner

There will be a stuffed pork chop dinner at the Braceville UMC off of St. Rt. 82 in the center of Braceville. The dinner begins at 4pm and we serve until 6:30pm unless food runs out. The dinner includes mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts, bread, coffee, tea or punch. The cost is $9 for adults and $3.50 for children. Takeout’s are available. This will be our last dinner until next fall.

 

Knee Deep in Bluebells

Back by popular demand! This hike (9:00-11:00am) provides one of the most unbelievable and spectacular sights wildflower displays in all of Ohio. In a setting among some of the largest trees in the state, the 250 acre Poland Municipal Forest southeast of Youngstown plays host each spring to thousands upon thousands of wild bluebells and other spring wildflowers. The forest floor is literally awash with a carpet of bluebells, dabs of red and white trilliums and a haze of marsh marigolds; the artistry of nature in all its glory. Sponsored by the Friends of the Hiram College Field Station (hiking fee: $5 for members of Friends of the Field Station, $8 for non-member). For example, Ohio State University will save $1 million this year by buying 50 megawatts (about 25% of the campus’s electricity) from Ohio’s largest commercial wind farm (Columbus Dispatch, 1/28/13). Portage County Soap Box Derby

The Portage County Soap Box Derby is looking for a student, or students to sing the “Star Spangled Banner” at the opening ceremony for the local race on June 15. Let’s Build a Community

Let’s Build Community at the Center.  Open community days at the gymnasium at the old Mantua Center School, 11741 Mantua Center Rd. (just north of SR 82) will continue, but now on the first and third Wednesdays (changed from Tuesday) of each month, with reduced hours of 10am to 4 pm.  Potluck lunch at noon.  Meet with friends, or make some new ones.  Play cards or other games, learn quilt piecing or crochet.  Help work a challenging new jigsaw puzzle which will be started on May first.  Not just for seniors!  Folks of all ages are invited, but youngsters must have supervision.

Roadside & Park Clean-up

Newton Township Scrap Tire Drive

Newton Township will host a scrap tire collection drive on Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th, 2013 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. on the grounds of the Newton Township Administration Building, 4410 Newton Falls-Bailey Road. Tires will be accepted from residents of Newton Township only and ID is required. No tractor tires or tires with rims will be accepted, and residents are limited to 4 tires. Shalersville School Alumni

On May 4 in the Shalersville Town Hall the Shalersville School Alumni will meet to celebrate all past Shalersville schoolmates. The first alumni was held on 1st Saturday in May in 1913, so this is the 100th year since our alumni began.  Come celebrate this wonderful evening with former classmates and friends. Poet Jeanne Bryner to Speak at Reed Memorial Library

On May 5 at 2 p.m., poet and Nurse Jeanne Bryner will be at Reed Memorial Library, sharing selections from her book of poems, titled Smoke. Bryner has been awarded an American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award for this collection of poems, which centers on her life and work as an emergency room Nurse in Warren, OH.  Smoke also received 2nd place honors in the Public Interest/Creative Writing category from the American Journal of Nursing.  Copies of Smoke will be available for purchase/ signing. Demonstration of Pastel Painting

The Trumbull Art Gallery is featuring a talk by Karen Ferrick, a member of the Pittsburgh Pastel Artist League, who will demonstrate the art of creating a pastel painting from sketch to finished piece at 1:30pm.  Her talk will last about 1 1/2 hour.  Karen has been an art teacher in the Burrell School District for the last 14 years, and started working with pastels 8 years ago.  She has taught pastel workshops in Pittsburgh, and given many demonstrations in Ohio and Pennsylvania.  She looks forward to sharing her love of pastels with you.  Admission is free.

 

Greg Bartholomew’s Comic Book Art Collection

 May 4- June 8

Greg Bartholomew will share his comic book art collection with the public in a show being held at the Trumbull Art Gallery.  The featured artists are Alex Ross, known for his realistic paintings of classic comic book characters, and Barry Windsor Smith, who broke into the mainstream comic book industry as the artist of Conan the Barbarian.  His style eventually moved into a dynamic and realistic style more aligned with Italian Renaissance.   The opening reception will be held May 4, from 5-7 pm.  Admission is free

The Perennial Gardeners are holding their annual plant sale, May 11, rain or shine, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Chester Town Hall parking lot.  The popular sale features annuals, hanging baskets, herbs and hundreds of perennials, many of which have been raised by club members.  Knowledgeable club members will be happy to assist you in choosing the appropriate plants for your gardening needs. Profits from the sale enable the club to continue planting and caring for the bandstand and corner park at Routes 306 and 322, offer scholarships to horticultural students, present educational programs at each monthly meeting and support many other gardening activities in the community.

Geauga County Tourism’s Annual Spring Drive-it-Yourself Tour will be May 11th, with 13 new stops for a total of 25 to choose from.  Each stop offers special activities, demonstrations, sales, treats or drawings to tour participants. May 13 marks the start of pre-registration for students to enter the TRTA Spelling Bee. The 27th Annual Spelling Bee is sponsored by Trumbull Retired Teachers and is set for July 11, at 1 p.m. at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds on Everett-Hull Road. Preregistration for grades 1 through 8 will begin on May 13, and is accepted until June 13. All preregistered spellers will get free admission to the fair with rides excluded. “Life on the Rocks”

Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park, 12440 State Rt. 282 Garrettsville, OH 44231 May 18, 10:00 AM – Noon. Free offering.  Join Master Gardener and former ODNR Park Manager Mike Blakeman for a 1 mile interpretive hike to see the park’s spring wild flowers and explore its impressive plant diversity. Learn about the area’s unique geology and how many of the plants have adapted to growing on bare rock. This is a good opportunity to see and learn about the area’s spring wild flowers including the rare red trillium. Autism 5k and walk

The Rotary Club of Mantua is sponsoring the 9th annual Farmers Market. The location will be at the Christ Lutheran Church parking lot at 10827 S.R 44, in Mantua.  The market will run every Saturday, from June 22 – October 12. The hours will be 9am-12:30pm.  The cost is $5.00 if you sign up for 8 week-ends or more.  For those who sign up for less the cost is $7.00. Ride and Raise funds for our local Veterans.

Motorcyclists can participate in a 2-hour scenic ride through beautiful Geauga County on Sunday, June 30, 2013. The ride starts at Geauga County Fairgrounds in Burton, OH (14373 N Cheshire St) and will be led by Sheriff Dan McClelland and his dog, “Midge”.
