The Hiram College JH Barrow Field Station will once again play host to this series of Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland bird walks which begin at 7:30am. Join local naturalist Eric Faber and other birding enthusiasts at 7:30am for a casual walk around the Field Station. These hikes are for beginners and experts alike. Back by popular demand! This hike (9:00-11:00am) provides one of the most unbelievable and spectacular sights wildflower displays in all of Ohio. In a setting among some of the largest trees in the state, the 250 acre Poland Municipal Forest southeast of Youngstown plays host each spring to thousands upon thousands of wild bluebells and other spring wildflowers. The forest floor is literally awash with a carpet of bluebells, dabs of red and white trilliums and a haze of marsh marigolds; the artistry of nature in all it is glory. Newton Township will host a scrap tire collection drive on Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th, 2013 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. on the grounds of the Newton Township Administration Building, 4410 Newton Falls-Bailey Road. Tires will be accepted from residents of Newton Township only and ID is required. No tractor tires or tires with rims will be accepted, and residents are limited to 4 tires. Poet Jeanne Bryner to Speak at Reed Memorial Library

On May 5 at 2 p.m., poet and Nurse Jeanne Bryner will be at Reed Memorial Library, sharing selections from her book of poems, titled Smoke. Bryner has been awarded an American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award for this collection of poems, which centers on her life and work as an emergency room Nurse in Warren, OH. Plant Sale

The Perennial Gardeners are holding their annual plant sale, May 11, rain or shine, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Chester Town Hall parking lot. The popular sale features annuals, hanging baskets, herbs and hundreds of perennials, many of which have been raised by club members. Knowledgeable club members will be happy to assist you in choosing the appropriate plants for your gardening needs. Profits from the sale enable the club to continue planting and caring for the bandstand and corner park at Routes 306 and 322, offer scholarships to horticultural students, present educational programs at each monthly meeting and support many other gardening activities in the community.

Learn about the area’s unique geology and how many of the plants have adapted to growing on bare rock. This is a good opportunity to see and learn about the area’s spring wild flowers including the rare red trillium. Tree ID will be covered and include Canadian Hemlock and Yellow Birch, both associated more with colder northern climates. Wear sturdy footwear for rocky and uneven terrain. Rain or shine.
