Labor Day Weekend

The Crestwood High School Class of 1973 is planning its 40th class reunion. The reunion will be held Labor Day Weekend. We are in the process of forming a mailing list of all class members. If we can get e-mails it will greatly reduce our mailing costs for this event. Vendors are still being accepted.  The cost for this year’s market has remained the same, $60.00 for the entire season. The Farmers’ Markets will run from July 24 through October 2 every Wednesday from 3:00 – 6:30pm in the Skylane Bowling Alley parking lot. Scholarship Offer

Chiropractic Center of Garrettsville is happy to announce that they will be offering a scholarship to senior athletes at James A. Garfield High School for the sixth year. The scholarship will be for $850.00. It may be used as the student needs. Applications are available at the chiropractic office or through the school counselor.

Raptor Education Program

The Birds in Flight Sanctuary of Warren, Ohio, will be presenting a Raptor Education Program on April 13 at 7pm. This is a FREE event and is open to the public. The program is being sponsored by The Eagle Creek Conservation Club and will be held at their club facilities located at 5525 Eagle Creek Road, Leavittsburg, Ohio 44430. Doors will open at 6pm and seating is limited. This program will give people an understanding, appreciation, and concern for raptors and other wildlife. It will also explain the licenses and training required to run a rehabilitation facility and the environmental issues involved. Then the birds will be welcomed out one by one for their introduction. Come bring the kids and join us for this educational and highly entertaining evening.

Soap Box Derby Workshop

The Portage County Soap Box Derby is hosting a Derby Racing Workshop on Apr 14 at 4386 SR 303, in Shalersville Township (1/2 mile west from SR 44). The car clinic will be from 1-3pm.  The workshop is to answer questions on racing, how to tune a car for the best performance, and how to build a car.  Families that race may bring their car to tune it for the May 4th and 5th rally race.  Light refreshments will be provided.  Those families having children that are unsure about racing may have a ride in a derby car for free.  The ages for racing are 7-17 years old.  You may inquire about our almost free corporate racing program for the local race on June 15th in Mantua, or the Stem Racing Derby program for your local school.  For more information go to our web site: pcsdoh@org

Taking “Thyme” to Learn

Apr 15, at 10AM, Friends of the Austintown Library will present Taking “Thyme” to Learn about Herbs with Theresa Lyden from the Holborn Herbs Growers Guild.  Theresa is a member of the guild, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary. The HHGG maintains the gardens at the Western Reserve Historical Village in Canfield Fair grounds and Boardman Park gardens. The members of the guild meet monthly and the purpose is to educate members and the community about herbs. Meetings are open to the public.

Ouija, The Talking Cockatoo

Ouija (pronouned WeeGee) is an umbrella crested cockatoo that sings, dances, laughs and especially loves children. Trumbull County Federated Democratic Women will hold their annual  card party  on Apr 21 from 2-5pm at Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic NE, Warren. Newton Falls Kiwanis Club’s Annual Steak Dinner

The Newton Falls Kiwanis Club will hold their annual Steak Cookout on Apr 27, at the Newton Falls Community Center on Quarry Street. The meal includes a 14-ounce sirloin steak, on the grill, cooked as you wish, salad, potato, drink, and dessert, all for $15.00. Pork Chop Dinner

There will be a stuffed pork chop dinner at the Braceville UMC off of St. Rt. 82 in the center of Braceville. The dinner begins at 4pm and we serve until 6:30pm unless food runs out. The dinner includes mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts, bread, coffee, tea or punch. The cost is $9 for adults and $3.50 for children. Takeout’s are available. This will be our last dinner until next fall.

The City of Newton Falls will be conducting its Annual Citywide roadside and park Clean-up Day on May 4 at 9am.   Any interested groups, organizations, or individuals that would like to participate in the clean-up day are invited to join us.  Sign in registration will be held behind City Hall.  The City will provide garbage bags, rubber gloves and safety vests to participants.  We will also be holding a scrap tire collection from 9-12 at Street Department on Church Street.  For more information please contact City Clerk, Kathy King at 330-872-0806 M-F 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Spring Wildflower Hike

A hike showcasing many of Northeast Ohio’s spring wildflowers will be May 4 from 10a-12pm at Eagle Creek State Nature Preserve. This event is free and open to the public. Trunk Sale

May 11

The Girard Junior Women annual trunk sale will be 10-2 on May 11 on 100 N Market Street in Girard. The event will take place rain or shine. Call Laura at 330 545 5962 if interested in a spot. Spots for the trunk sale are available at ten dollars each. The public is encouraged to come out and shop the area which will have a variety of goods for sale. The event will be held on the Girard City lot across from the City Building and is visible from 422.

 

Plant Sale

May 11

The Perennial Gardeners are holding their annual plant sale, May 11, rain or shine, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Chester Town Hall parking lot.  The popular sale features annuals, hanging baskets, herbs and hundreds of perennials, many of which have been raised by club members.  Knowledgeable club members will be happy to assist you in choosing the appropriate plants for your gardening needs. Profits from the sale enable the club to continue planting and caring for the bandstand and corner park at Routes 306 and 322, offer scholarships to horticultural students, present educational programs at each monthly meeting and support many other gardening activities in the community.

 

Spring Drive-it-Yourself Tour

Geauga County Tourism’s Annual Spring Drive-it-Yourself Tour will be May 11th, with 13 new stops for a total of 25 to choose from.  Each stop offers special activities, demonstrations, sales, treats or drawings to tour participants. So choose 10 locations you have never visited, or your favorites for sales and unique activities. Mark your calendars now & watch for the tour map which will be available soon! “Life on the Rocks”

Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park, 12440 State Rt. 282 Garrettsville, OH 44231 May 18, 10:00 AM – Noon. Free offering.  Join Master Gardener and former ODNR Park Manager Mike Blakeman for a 1 mile interpretive hike to see the park’s spring wild flowers and explore its impressive plant diversity. Learn about the area’s unique geology and how many of the plants have adapted to growing on bare rock. This is a good opportunity to see and learn about the area’s spring wild flowers including the rare red trillium. Tree ID will be covered and include Canadian Hemlock and Yellow Birch, both associated more with colder northern climates. Wear sturdy footwear for rocky and uneven terrain. Rain or shine. Little Tigers Golf Outing

The Newton Falls Little Tigers will be holding their annual golf outing on June 8, 2013.  The four man scramble will be an 8:00 shotgun held at the Olde Dutch Mill golf course. The price is $65.00 per person and will include lunch, dinner, and beverages. Prizes will be given on all holes. Autism 5k and walk

June 15

Akron’s Autism 5k and Walk, formerly Akron Walks for Autism, is the Autism Society of Greater Akron’s premier fundraising and autism awareness event.  Money raised stays local to support individuals with autism, their families, and the professionals who support them.  The event will be held on June 15 at Lock 3 in downtown Akron.  The Autism Society of Greater Akron provides vital programs and services to families living with autism in Summit, Stark, Wayne, Portage and Medina counties and is part of the Autism Society of Ohio. Farmers Market

The Rotary Club of Mantua is sponsoring the 9th annual Farmers Market. The location will be at the Christ Lutheran Church parking lot at 10827 S.R 44, in Mantua.  The market will run every Saturday, from June 22 – October 12. The hours will be 9am-12:30pm.  The cost is $5.00 if you sign up for 8 week-ends or more.  For those who sign up for less the cost is $7.00. Ride and Raise funds for our local Veterans.

Motorcyclists can participate in a 2-hour scenic ride through beautiful Geauga County on Sunday, June 30, 2013. The ride starts at Geauga County Fairgrounds in Burton, OH (14373 N Cheshire St) and will be led by Sheriff Dan McClelland and his dog, “Midge”. Registration opens at 8:00am and the $25.00 per motorcycle fee includes breakfast.
