The Portage County Gardeners would like to invite you to join their clubs in 2013. Programs, workshops, field trips, crafts and friendship are just some of the reasons for joining a club. Praise and Worship Service

Saturdays 

Southington U.M.C. Praise and Worship Services are held Saturdays at 7pm. Casual dress and refreshments afterwards. Located at the town center on S.R. 305

 

Volunteers Needed

Geauga Co. Job and Family Services is looking for caring, motivated adults to volunteer a few hours a week tutoring local elementary students in basic reading and math. Volunteers will be required to attend training at Geauga Co. Job and Family Services and complete a criminal background check. Portage APL Promo

With the holidays over and the season of giving behind us, Portage APL knows that the next couple of months will bring a lull in activity.  So, to celebrate 2013, dog adoptions are only $125 (reg. $150) and cat adoptions are $40 (reg. $50) until the end of January!  All dogs and cats adopted are up to date on vaccines, spayed or neutered, checked for appropriate disease and free of fleas and worms.  Many are also microchipped and have an additional medical history. Crestwood BOE Special Meeting

The Crestwood Board of Education will hold a Special Meeting on Jan. 17 at 6pm at the Special Services Building, 4571 W. Prospect St. in Mantua. The purpose of this meeting will be for a presentation from Chevron Energy Solutions, with possible board action, personnel actions and the Board will move into Executive Session to consider the appointment, employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion, demotion, or compensation of a public employee or official, or to consider the investigations of charges or complaints against a public employee, official, licensee or “regulated individual.”

 

Chicken & Dumplings Dinner

Spaghetti Dinner

A spaghetti dinner will be held Jan. 19 from 4-7pm at the Western Reserve Masonic Lodge, St. Rt. 88 in West Farmington. Dinner includes salad, bread and pie, cost is $7 adults, $4.50 ages 5-12, children under 5 eat free. Carry-outs are available for $7.50

 

Bluegrass Music Show

A Bluegrass Music Show will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. on Jan. 19, at the Shalersville Town Hall, located on S.R. 44 at S.R. 303.  Doors open at 6 p.m. The event will feature three bands Coney Carver & The Rainbow Valley Boys, Red Dust Mountain Boys, and Highway 57. Salli Swindell Visit

Salli Swindell, co-author of They Draw & Cook 107 Recipes Illustrated by Artists from Around the World and website www.theydrawandcook.com will be at the Aurora Memorial Library on Jan. 19, at 2:00 pm in the gallery. The idea behind the book and website is “unique and artful cooking adventure for all ages”, as people from all continents submit artwork depicting the recipes. Copies will be available for purchase following Swindell’s presentation. Refreshments will be provided by the Aurora Cooks Club.

 

Legislative Brunch

The League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown will host the annual Legislative Brunch on Jan.19, at 10:00 AM . This year the brunch features changes in location and program format. The event will be at the Youngstown Country Club, 1402 Youngstown Country Club Dr. and will be open to the public .  The program will feature 2 key  issues: school finance and Reform of Congress and the Senate.   Invited guests include US  Senator Sherrod Brown, US Sen. Robert Portman, US  Rep. William Johnson ,US Rep. Timothy Ryan,Sen. Capri Cafaro, Sen. Joseph Schiavoni, Rep. Ronald Gerberry  and  Rep. Robert Hagan. Windham Marching Band Disney Fundraising

The band has funds for their Disney trip due at the end of this month and need help to meet the cost. Last minute fundraisers currently going on are: Tag Day Jan. 19 from 10 am – 2 pm  in Windham,

Spaghetti dinner and concert Jan. 26 from 5-7 with a Chinese auction at Windham High School. Please help to support the trip and any donations for the trip can be made to Windham High School to Rebecca Kresen Band Director.

 

Pancakes at Hambden Grange

Crestwood Band Citrus Sale

Blood Drive

It is time for our 1st blood drive of the new year at the Newton Falls United Methodist Church, 336 Ridge Rd., Newton Falls, OH. We are looking forward to seeing all our old friends again and all the newcomers too. We are always happy with new faces. It will be held, Jan. 23, from noon to 6PM in our fellowship hall.

 

Swim with the Hiram College Water Dogs

Classes are held  2 – 3 pm, 3 – 4 pm, 4 – 5 pm, 5 – 6 pm on Sunday afternoons. All Levels, All Hours, Lesson are 45 minutes with 15 minutes of free time at the end. Pre-School Open House

The Aurora Co-op Preschool, located at Centerville Mills, 8558 Crackel Road, will hold an Open House and Registration event for the 2013-2014 school year on Jan. 26, 2013 from 11:00AM – 1:00 PM. During the open house, families can tour the school, speak with teachers, enjoy refreshments, and complete enrollment paperwork/payment. The Aurora Co-op Preschool offers developmentally appropriate classes for children ages 2-5. The school is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and has been named a Three-Star Step Up To Quality Program by the State of Ohio. In 2012, the Aurora Co-op Preschool was recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation with a Nature Explore certification for outdoor learning and was designated a WILD School Site by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Stuffed Pork Chop Dinner

There will be a stuffed pork chop dinner at the Braceville UMC off of St. Rt. 82 in the center of Braceville on Jan. 26. The dinner begins at 4:00 and we will serve until 6:30 unless food runs out. The dinner includes mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts, bread, coffee, tea, or punch. The cost is $9 for adults and $3.50 for children. Takeout’s are available. 

 

Spaghetti Dinner

Monthly Gathering

The EarlyJAS Society will hold its regular monthly gathering on Jan. 27 from 2:00-5:00 PM at the British American Club, 8564 Ravenna Rd., Twinsburg, OH (near the intersection of Route 82 East and Ravenna Rd.) EarlyJAS invites traditional jazz musicians to come and play, and all others interested to come and listen. We especially encourage student musicians to take part. The club provides a good set of drums, a piano and amplification for vocals. It is an informal event, and everyone gets a chance to play. Good music, cash bar, pizza. Bring your axe, or simply come and listen or dance.

 

Crestwood Girls Fast Pitch Signups

4th Annual Chase Your Shadow 5K Race

Chase the chills away!  Enjoy a brisk run to loosen up those muscles and get back into the swing of things.  Reconnect with fellow runners at the 4th Annual Chase Your Shadow 5K Race in Portage Lakes State Park.  It is sponsored by the Friends of Portage Lakes State Park, and will take place at 10:00 a.m. Feb. 2.  Entry fee is $20 through Active.com and includes a race tee shirt for advance registration.  Registration closes Jan. 30.  Any profit earned by the race will be used by the Friends Group on projects at the State Park, including the proposed Environmental Education Space. WILD About Bats Workshop

Looking For Our Next Grand Marshall

The Candidate must be a community-minded Ravenna resident who has had a positive impact in the community. The committee asks that when nominating, the reason and some background information be included. The Grand Marshal will preside over the grand parade and all other festivities of the Balloon A-Fair Festival.  This year’s event will be Sept. 19 – 22, 2013.
