The Portage County Gardeners would like to invite you to join their clubs in 2013. Programs, workshops, field trips, crafts and friendship are just some of the reasons for joining a club. Soup Supper

Jan. 4

The Mantua American Legion 193 and Auxiliary will hold its regular soup supper at the Village Park Lodge on Jan. 4 at 6pm. Open to public. The dinner includes a variety of homemade soups, salads and desserts. $7 for adults, $3 for children. The legion will meet Jan. 10 at 7:30pm  and the Auxiliary will meet on Jan. 14 at 1pm

 

Monthly Dance

Jan. 5

Portage County Chapter #600 of International Parents without Partners will have its monthly dance on Jan. 5 from 7:30-11:30 at the Ritchie Memorial Shelter House, 109 W. Ave in Tallmadge. Free Water Testing

Jan 6

Protect your water from gas well drilling contamination!  Free testing will be held on Jan 6 at 3:15 P.M. King of Glory Church (Next to the Streetsboro Post Office) Streetsboro Plaza off Route 303. Let cold water run ten mins to eliminate residue in pipes. Collect 2 cup samples in clean wide mouth glass jar.  TAKE WATER CLOSEST TO WELL, BEFORE TREATMENT.  Test is not EPA certified but indicates spikes in chemicals when contamination occurs.  For information contact Mary 330-472-8086

 

Winter Storytime Registration

Registration Begins Jan 7

Portage County District Library is pleased to announce that winter storytime registration begins Jan. 7. Storytimes begin the week of Jan.  28 (at most branch locations.) Enjoy stories, fingerplays, and crafts at your favorite branch location. Visit www.portagelibrary.org to search our calendar for storytime dates and times. Contact your branch location to register for programs or for more information. Branch locations include Aurora Memorial (330-562-6502), Garrettsville (330-527-4378), Pierce Streetsboro (330-626-4458), Randolph (330-325-7003), and Windham (330-326-3145.) There are a few branch locations with limited seating, so be sure to register early.

 

JA Garfield Public Meeting

Jan. 10

James A. Garfield School District will be holding a public meeting on Jan. 10.  This will provide the opportunity before the monthly board meeting for questions/comments regarding the spending of IDEA funds for our district.  Please join us at the Middle School Library on Thursday at 6:15 pm.

 

All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner

Newton Falls K of C Council will be hosting an All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti dinner from 12:00pm-3:00pm At Saint Mary & Joseph’s Social Hall 120 Maple Drive. Newton Falls. Dinner Includes: Spaghetti & meatballs, salad, Italian bread, coffee or punch, and dessert. Adults $7; Children (6-11) $3; Under age5 FREE. (Carry out available)

Getting Ahead Workshop

Jan. 15

Getting Ahead is a 16-week workshop series where participants work in groups to examine the impact of poverty on themselves and their communities and to explore the world through the lens of economic class. This class is ideal for both individuals who are working to transition from poverty to self-stability or middle-class individuals that want to better serve their community. Design & Beyond Symposium

The Master Gardeners of Summit County will present the annual Design & Beyond Symposium on Jan 19, at St. Sebastian’s Zwisler Hall, 348 Elmdale Ave. Akron, OH 44320  from 8:30 am – 2:30 pm (check-in at 8 am)  Cost for the Symposium is $40, and includes program materials, a continental breakfast and lunch.  Early reservations are encouraged, as this event sells out. Go to www.summitmastergardeners.org for further information and a downloadable registration form.  Registrations must be postmarked by or before January 4.  Late registration will be accepted until January 12 Participants will be notified by e-mail/or mail at an increased fee of $45.

Looking For Our Next Grand Marshall

Due by Feb. 8 

The Candidate must be a community minded Ravenna resident who has had a positive impact in the community. The committee asks that when nominating, that the reason and some background information be included. The Grand Marshal will preside over the grand parade and all other festivities of the Balloon A-Fair Festival.  This year’s event will be Sept. 19 – 22, 2013. Written nominations for Grand Marshal should be submitted no later than Feb. 8, 2013.  Mail to: Ravenna Balloon A-Fair, Attention Parade Committee, and P.O.
