Historical Society Open

First Saturday of Month

The James A. Garfield Historical Society will be open the first Saturday of every month between 10:00 and 3:00.  We are located at the corner of Main St. and High St. in Garrettsville. Microfilm of the Garrettsville Journals is available for research. Everyone is welcome.

 

3rd Annual Rib Dinner

Fridays in Aug.

The Mantua council of the Knights of Columbus will host their 3rd annual Rib Dinner Fridays during August 2012.  Delicious, slow-cooked St. Louis Style Rib Dinners will be offered for carryout or you are welcome to picnic on our lawn. Regular Rib Dinner includes: Half Slab Ribs, Baked Potato, Cole slaw, Baked Beans and Corn on the Cob for $12.50 each.  Light Rib Dinner includes: Half Slab Ribs, Cole slaw and baked beans for $11.00 each.  Extra Cob Corn, Baked Potatoes and Bottled Water will also be available $1.00 each. Come on out and enjoy our most delicious rib dinners between 4-7PM on Fridays August 3, 10, 17 & 24th.  Mantua K of C is located on State Route 44 just north of Route 82 in Mantua, Ohio. We have a beautiful country setting, perfect for lawn style picnics.  So pack your blanket, bring your own beverage, play some games and enjoy a delicious rib dinner. Youth Cheer Camp

The James A. Garfield High School Cheerleaders will hold their annual Youth Cheer Camp Aug 20 – 22 from 6pm – 8pm. The camp includes two hour practices for three days and an invitation to perform before the First G-Men Varsity home game. Youth cheerleaders will learn 1 dance, 1 cheer, and 3 sideline cheers. Injection Well Issues

Portage County currently has 16 active class II injection wells and 9 permits pending.  Elisa Young, of Meigs County, OH educational presentation will cover:  What are injection wells?  How are they constructed?  What gets injected? Windham Lions Roll Out Their Sausage Wagon

The Windham Lions will hold their next sandwich sale of 2012 in the Sparkle Market parking lot in Windham, August 3rd and 4th.  As always the menu consists of Italian sausage or steak sandwiches and soft drinks. Sandwiches are only $4. They are hot, juicy and fresh off the grill. Hours are 9am to 7pm on Friday, 9am to 2pm on Saturday. All profits will be used for sight-related causes and local community needs. Please stop by and support the dedicated, hard-working Windham Lions.

 

North Jackson Community Sales

North Jackson, Mahoning County, is holding a Community Wide Yard Sale with over 175 homes listed on a map to help shoppers locate each sale in the township.  It is to be held August 3rd and 4th starting at 9 AM..  Maps can be found at most businesses and at 11349  W. Mahoning Ave, where there is Free Parking. .  Businesses are offering specials which will be listed in the 12 page map.  This is so large it will take 2 days to shop at all the homes.  It is sponsored by the Jackson Twp. Citizens Association

Brittany Myers Poker Run

The 11th Annual Brittany Myers Memorial Poker Run will take place on Saturday, August 4th Registration starts at 10AM at the Windham American Legion Hall.  2 or 4 wheels are welcome.  All proceeds go toward the Brittany Myers Scholarship Fund, the Special Needs Program at James A Garfield and the Youth Softball League. The Nelson United Methodist Church is having a yard sale. 9367 St Rt 305 on August 4, 8am-5pm. A ton of clean working usable items donated. Lunch will be served from 11 am- 2pm, eat in or carry out. Kent Lions Sweet Corn Festival

Kent Lions Sweet Corn Festival will be held at Beckwith Orchard, 1617 Lake Rockwell Rd in Kent, on August 4 & 5 from noon-5pm. Sponsored by Hometown Bank and Central Portage County Visitors & Convention Bureau. Food includes Pochedley’s Sweet Corn, sausage and hot dogs, peach and apple pie, ice cream, soft drinks and water. Family fun includes games, raffle, obstacle course, face painting, contests and trolley rides, along with live entertainment. Model A cars on display Saturday and classic cars on Sunday.

 

Windham Community Church Service

A community worship service will be held August 5 on the Windham Township Green.  This annual worship is sponsored by the WCCF and is called “Fun in Son.”  It will start with a worship service held at the Gazebo.  Ministers from the various churches will participate. It will be followed by a Community Prayer Walk, and an “Open Mike” opportunity where people will entertain the group with songs & music.  The day will conclude with the serving of ice cream.  Food,  for lunch, will be available for purchase. American Legion/Auxiliary Picnic

Mantua American Legion Post 193 and the Legion Auxiliary Unit 193 will hold its annual picnic on August 5 at the Shalersville park. Festivities will begin at 2pm with a potluck dinner and conclude at 5pm. The park pavilion is located on Route 303. members and families are asked to bring a dish to share, table service and additional games. Meat and beverages will be provided by the legion. Garrettsville UMC Vacation Bible School

Dive in and discover God’s underwater universe!  Kids will plunge into Bible stories of people with deep faith and learn to trust a God whose love is bigger than the sea.  Garrettsville United Methodist church will be hosting Vacation Bible School the week of Aug 6-9 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm each evening.  VBS is open to children ages 3yrs-6th grade.  Teen helpers are also needed.  Anyone interested in participating, please contact the church office at 527-2055.

 

Burton Vacation Bible School

The Burton Congregational Church will hold its Vacation Bible School for those entering Kindergarten through 6th grade on Monday, August 6 through Thursday, August 9 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  All children are welcome and pre-registration is not required.  This year’s theme is “Make a Joyful Noise” and includes stories about David the Psalmist, and Jesus, along with singing, games, crafts, and snacks. Crestwood Safety Town

Children entering Crestwood Kindergarten in the fall of 2012 will be introduced to a variety of topics focused on teaching them how to stay safe while at home, at school and at play. This educational program runs from August 6 – 10 from 9:00 to 11:30 am at Crestwood Primary School. Parkman Class of ‘48

The Parkman High School class of 1948 will hold its annual class reunion at Mary Yoder’s Restaurant in Middlefield on August 8 at noon. Joining them will be the Amish students that left the class after 8th grade. Special guest will be Mrs. Jean Giles, their teacher in grades 3 & 4.

 

Crestwood Class of ‘65

Library Fundraiser

The Friends of Garrettsville Library are  planning a fundraiser/ social event at the Candlelight Winery. There are no tickets to purchase, and everyone is welcome. This is your chance to support the library programs, and have a good time. Arrive after 4pm. There is no set charge for this event. Camping with Katydids

August 11 – 6:30 p.m., through Sunday, August 12 – 9:30 a.m. at Chickagami Park, 17858 Tavern Road (Rt. 168), Parkman Township. Arrive at 6:30 p.m. and pitch your tent in time to gather for the 7:30 p.m. singing insect search with cricket and katydid specialist Lisa Rainsong. Corn Celebration

The Geauga Fresh Farmers’ Market will celebrate corn on August 11, 2012. Customers will be treated to all kinds of corn treats from 10:00-Noon. Volunteers will be cooking ears of corn and customers will be encouraged to “paint” the corn with one of several toppings that may include Chile peppers, sour cream, lime, garlic, or other ingredients for an on-the-spot taste treat. Recipes will be provided. Vendors plan to get into the spirit with other corn related products

 

Newton Falls Youth Soccer League

Emerald Rose Corporation.  Emerald Rose is a not for profit corporation

with the goal of building Emerald Fields of Troy, a therapeutic farming

The Freedom Township School Room Mothers’ 2012 luncheon will be held at noon, on August 14 at the Freedom Town Hall. Annual Picnic

Aug 19

Freedom Township annual picnic will be held this year on August 19 in the Freedom town hall pavilion. Joining in the festivities will be the Freedom Congregational Church and the Bethel Springs congregations. Combined church services will be at 10am in a large tent. The VFW will hold a memorial service at noon. The lunch will be served right after the memorial service. The main meat dish will be provided by the township. The church is cooking hot dogs and hamburgers. All are asked to bring a dish to pass. Space will be provided on the lawn for an art, craft and music fair. Craft Show

Craft show tables available: The Kayla Irene Daniels Cure for Cancer Foundation will be hosting a craft show on September 8, at the Parkman Community House. The show will start at 10 am and close at 3 pm. Doors will open 2 hours prior to the show for set up. Tables are $25 each and are on a first come first serve basis. Gospel Fest

The Christian Life Center will host a Gospel Fest on September 23, 2012 at 3:30pm. The church is located at 5931 Rhodes Road Kent. (Church behind Gabriel Brothers) Doors open at 3:00 p.m. The Gospel Fest will showcase several local groups.  Interested groups can call the church for an application.  Applications must be returned within 30 days from the date received. The Gospel Fest is free and open to the public, although a freewill offering will be taken. Refreshments will be available for purchase. The 7th annual Alumni banquet will be held on September 15 at the J.A. Garfield Elementary School starting at 5pm. Reservations are $18 and need to be mailed by Sept. 1 to P.O. Box 93 Garrettsville. Please include the names and graduating years of the alumni attending. Classes being honored are class of ’52, ’62, ’72, and ’87. Friday night’s game against Southeast will be an away game.
