The J. A. Garfield School District is now accepting kindergarten registration information for your child who will turn age 5 before Sept 30, 2012. Registration will take place on Wednesday, March 14, Thursday March 15 and Friday March 16, 2012 at the elementary school.  Please call the Elementary School office at 330-527-2184 to schedule an appointment for your child as soon as possible.

Fellowship & Music
Wednesdays
Beginning on February 29, 2012, Wednesday night, at 7:00 p.m. and each Wednesday night  after  February 29 there will be fellowship and music at the Newton Falls United Methodist Church located at 336 Ridge Road, in Newton Falls.  This program will supply soup and drinks but most of all there will be worship, fellowship, and music.  The music will be provided the United Methodist Church Praise Band. Come and bring your friends.

American Legion Fish Fry

The Windham American Legion will be hosting a fish fry every Friday from 5 – 8  pm. Cost is $8.50.

Crafters & Vendors Wanted

Hiram Community Trust Grants
Apply By April 20
The Hiram Community Trust was created by Reign Hadsell with the goal of providing funds for projects that make the Hiram Community a distinctive and special place to live. It was Reign’s wish that these funds be used to promote a spirit of cooperation among Hiram Village and Township, Hiram College, James A. Garfield Schools and Crestwood Schools. Funding for projects ranging from several hundred dollars to $25,000 is available. Grants applications are due April 20, 2012 with funds available for projects beginning or after July 1, 2012. Lenten Fish Dinners
March 2,9,16, 23 & 30
St. John Byzantine Catholic Parish, 36125 Aurora Road (corner of Liberty and Aurora roads) will serve fish dinners during Lent on Fridays, March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. The dinner includes 2 pieces of breaded flounder, potato and pierogi (all oven-baked), bread or rolls, butter, beverage and dessert. Cost is $10 per dinner. Burton Public Library Book Sales

The Friends of the Burton Public Library will hold used-book sales at the library on each Sunday in March from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  There are items for everyone:  books, magazines, vintage materials, maps, vinyl LPs, CDs, tapes, movies and puzzles.   Sunday, March 25, will be “bag day.”   Please enter the sales through the white door located at the back of the building.

World Day of Prayer
March 2
World Day of Prayer 2012 will be observed on March 2.  A community service, led by the churches of Braceville, Lordstown and Newton Falls, will be held on Friday, March 2 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church, 2640 South Canal Street, Newton Falls  The theme of this year’s event is “Let Justice Prevail.”    Those attending are invited to bring a covered dish to the luncheon which will follow the service.

American Legion Breakfast

The Windham American Legion, Post #674 will be hosting a big breakfast buffet or an All-You_Can-Eat sausage and pancake breakfast on March 3 from 8-11 am at 9960 Center Street. Adults $7; Kids 12 and under $5; kids under 5 are free.

J.A. Garfield Historical Society Invites Visitors

The James A. Garfield Historical Society is now open on the first Saturday of every month between 10:00 and 3:00. We are located at the corner of Main and High Street in the center of Garrettsville.  The first Saturday of March is the 3rd.  We hope to see you!

Chili Cook-Off For Danielle Grim

The Fun Time Cloggers are sponsoring a Chili Cook-off on March 3 from 1-5 pm at the Holiday Inn Express, SR 5, Newton Falls.  Proceeds to benefit Daniell Grim,  a high school freshman who is battling bone cancer.  Tickets are $5. Texas Hold’em Poker Fundraiser

There will be a Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament fundraiser to benefit the Ravenna Buckeye Garage Door Ghosts baseball team on March 3.  Tournament will be held at the Ravenna Italian American club. Shalersville Pancake Breakfasts

Goodell Family Farm will again serve its traditional pancake breakfasts the first three Sundays in March, the 4th, 11th, and 18th at the Shalersville Townhall, at the corner of Routes 44 and 303.  The pancakes will be buckwheat or plain, with butter, freshly-made maple syrup, and country sausage.  Prices are adults, $7.50 and3.50, aged 3 to 12.  Children under age 3 are free.  We seat you and serve you.  Bring your friends.

Fishing Enthusiats Program

Pancake Breakfast Storytime at the Garrettsville Library

Election Day Soup Sale

The Windham Lions Club is busy planning a bean soup sale for Election Day March 6, 2012. Voters or hungry bean soup lovers can stop by the Windham Methodist church from 11 AM till 6 PM on March 6th for all-you-care-to-eat soup, cornbread, dessert and beverage. Prices are $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12. There will also be carry-out available in quart containers with 2 cornbreads and 2 desserts for $12.

West Geauga Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale

The Annual Spring Book Sale sponsored by the West Geauga Friends of the Library begins Wednesday, March 7 with the Members’ Preview (memberships are available at the door) from 4:00 to 6:30 P.M., followed by the open Public Sale from 6:30 to 8:30P.M. Windham Free Community Dinner

A free  community dinner  will be served March 8th  at the Brick Chapel, 9003 N. Main St. Windham.  Why cook when we will do it for you?  The dinner will be served  from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., while supply lasts.   All are welcome, bring your friends.  Come enjoy the food & the fellowship!  The dinner is provided by the Congregational UCC of Windham.  They are providing free dinners on the second Thursday of each month.  There is a ramp access at the front of the building.  No carry-outs.  For more information call 330-326-3133.

Swim with the Hiram College Water Dogs

Line Dance Lessons

Ravenna Parks and Recreation Department is offering line dance lessons.  Come join with your friends to learn classic and new line dances and improve your health at the same time. Open to teens and adults the lessons will begin on March 13 to May 1 (no class April 24th)  for 7 weeks. The lessons are held at John Tontimonia City Park Tower Lodge on Tuesdays.  Cost is $55 for city taxpayers or $60 for non-city taxpayers.  Min 15 and max 30. Deadline to register is March 9 or until filled.

All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner

The next Western Reserve Kiwanis All-U-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner will be Friday, March 9th, 5-7 pm in the Hiram College Kennedy Center.
Dinner includes spaghetti with a choice of meat or marinara sauce, salad, garlic bread, beverage and dessert.  Adults are $6 and kids 8 and under eat FREE! Carry-out available.  NEW! Nelson-Garrettsville Community Cupboard Grand Opening

Please join us for the Grand Opening Celebration of the Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard on March 10th from 2:00-4:00.  The Cupboard is located behind Isaac Mills Bakery at 9415 St. Rt. 305 on the Nelson Circle.  Come meet our volunteers and take a tour of the Cupboard.  Refreshments will be served.

Senior Bingo

Girl Scout Activities

Free Girl Scout activities in Windham for girls in 4th – 8th grade. Program will begin Tuesday, March 13th at the Windham Renaissance Family Center and will run for 12 sessions, every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:00pm-4:30pm. Amateur Radio Class

An Amateur Radio class starts March 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the Dietrich Building located beneath the radio tower at Family & Community Services, 705 Oakwood Street in Ravenna.  Students can earn their Technician License and join the exciting and fun hobby of amateur radio.  There is a $25 fee payable to the Portage County Amateur Radio Service (PCARS); texts are $30 and will be available at the class.   Contact Jim Aylward, KC8PD, 330-297-7979, kc8pd@portcars.org for more information.

Pricetown Home-Cooked Supper

The next home-cooked supper at Pricetown Methodist Church, 4640 Pritchard-Ohltown Rd., Newton Falls, will feature meatloaf, potatoes, vegetable, salad, roll, homemade desserts and a beverage. The meal will be on  March 14 from 5 to 6:30 P.M.  Cost $7.00 for adults,  $3.00 for children,  6 to 12 years,  and free for children 5 years and younger.

Garden Club Card Party

Come one anmd all to the card party sponsored by the Warren Township Garden Club. The party will be held on March  15, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.at the Johnson Community Center, Gilmer Road, Leavittsburg.  There will be card games, Scrabble and Yahtzee, and bingo.   There will be a meal included with the entry fee of $5.00 per person.  We also will be having a Chinese Auction.  Come and have fun with your friends.

Paws For Reading
March 17, 24 & 31
For children struggling with reading, the Paws for Reading program has proven successful in helping them build confidence in their reading skills.  Each child is paired with one dog for a half hour session of reading.  Three sessions of Paws for Reading will be held at the Burton Public Library.  On Saturdays March 17, 24 and 31, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.,  children may come to the library for a half hour session of reading with a therapy dog.  Appointments are required.  To schedule a time for your child, please call Beth Pettit at 440-564-7139.

Amvets Breakfast
March 18
Amvets Post 112 will be hosting a breakfast to support the troops on March 18 from 9 am – Noon at 37 W. Broad St, Newton Falls.  Cost is $6 adults; $4 children ages 4-9 and free for kids under 4.

Step Into Spring – Tools To Help Manage Arthritis Pain

A free community education program will be held on March 20 from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the Abraham Family Room 150 at Robinson Medical Arts Building, 6847 N. Chestnut St., Ravenna. Blue Grass Mass

The Chamber Singers (formerly Hiram College Choir) will be performing a “Blue Grass Mass,”  complete with a Bluegrass band, on Friday,  March 30th, 2011, at Hiram Christian Church at 7:30 pm.  All voices are still welcome to audition, but we are very much in need of altos and tenors!   Rehearsals are Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:15 – 5:30 in Frohring Recital Hall. Faculty, staff, and community members are also welcome.

Amateur Comedy Night

The Garrettsville Curtains up Theatre will host their third Amateur Comedy Night, at Slim n Jumbo’s on April 14th at 7pm. Amateur comedians from all across Northeast Ohio will gather for the prize money, being awarded to the funniest comedians of the evening. Currently there are 8 comedians registered for this event. Last November, the comedians performed to a standing room only audience of over 90 people. Tickets for this event are $5.00 in advance or $10.00 at the door.
