Games will be played against teams in our league as well as teams from Kent and Stow. Public Observation Night

On Saturday August 13th Stephens Memorial Observatory of Hiram College will host a public observing night from 9:30 pm to 11pm, weather permitting. Earth’s Moon will be the feature of the night seen in all its brilliance through the Observatory’s large telescope. If conditions permit stars and star clusters will also be viewed. The Observatory is located on Wakefield Road (Rt. 82) less than a quarter of a mile west of Route 700 in Hiram. No reservations are required and there is no admission fee for observatory public nights. Cloudy skies at the starting time cancel the event and, in that case, the observatory will not open. There is no parking at the Observatory. Visitors may park on permissible side streets or in the nearby parking lot of Harrison’s Hideaway Convenience Store, 6821 Wakefield Road, a short distance east of the observatory.

The Friendly Squares western-style square dance club is sponsoring a “Western Night of Fun” on Saturay, August 13. This evening is to introduce everyone to the fun and new friendships of square dancing. No experience is necessary and ages from the young to the young-at-heart are invited. At 4 p.m., opening ceremonies will include astronomy-themed music, resolutions and birthday cake for all. The Northern Chapter, Ohio Region, of the Antique Auto Club of America, is planning a fun filled family summer event at the Patterson Fruit Farm in Chesterland, Ohio on Sunday August 21, 2011- a GENUINE ANTIQUE AUTO SHOW! The show, held on the grass at the Farm, at 11414 Caves Rd.,, 2.5 miles north of Mayfield Rd., will showcase vehicles that are a minimum of twenty five years old in 19 judged classes. It is anticipated that 200 quality vintage and antique display vehicles will attend. Gates open at 8 A.M., cars on the field by 10 A.M. and the awards ceremony begins at 3:30 P.M. It is anticipated that the awards ceremony will conclude at approximately 4:30 P.M. In order to make the event attractive to the entire family, all display vehicle occupants will be able to visit the show without charge! Pre-registration fee for display vehicles is $12.50, if received before August 17, 2011. The fee for registrations received after August 18th is $15.00. Admission for adult spectators is $5.00, children 12 and under, free. Trailer parking is available. Ravenna Parks and Recreation is registering now for Pre-Dance Combo lessons for children 3 to 5 years old. Registration and payment in person during registration from August 22 to September 2. Classes held at John Tontimonia City Park and continue throughout the school year ending with a Spring Recital end of April 2012. Class fee of $80.00 for Ravenna city taxpayers or $85.00 for non-city taxpayers is due at the time of registration; the second payment of $85.00 for CTP or $90.00 for NCTP is due by November 4. This would include barns / monuments / bridges and buildings. We are looking for things such as unique designs on barns, stained glass, carvings etc. Each submission will require two (2) photographs. One photo will be an up close shot of a unique aspect of the building / structure and the second will be a full shot of the building / structure. Friends of Melana Murder Mystery Night

Friends of Melana are hosting a murder mystery dinner at the K of C Hall in Mantua on September 10, 2011 with the doors opening at 6pm. Tickets are $25 each which includes the catered dinner and the drama. Tickets are on sale now at Millers Restaurant and Huntington Bank in Garrettsville. The drama is being performed by the Curtains-Up Theatre and will be an interactive performance. Along with the dinner there will be a 50/50 raffle, cash bar (beer & wine) and a Chinese auction. Mantua Potato Stomp Race and Fun Run

The 33rd Annual 9-mile potato stomp race and 1-mile run run are planned in conjunction with the Mantua Potato Festival. The races will be run on Saturday morning September 10th. The one-mile fun run will begin at 8:30am and the 9-mile race will begin at 9am. Both start at Crestwood High School. If you pre-register, fees for the 9 mile race are $13/$18 (no shirt/shirt) and for the fun run $5/$13 (no shirt/ shirt).
