Observe the Moon Night

Stephens Memorial Observatory of Hiram College will be open from 8:00 to 10:00 pm October 12, participating in the annual International Observe the Moon Night. On that night people around the world will gather to appreciate Earth’s nearest neighbor in space. At Hiram’s event, visitors will observe the First Quarter Moon through Hiram’s 112-year-old telescope that provides lunar views of remarkable contrast and detail, and at multiple levels of magnification. If time and conditions permit, other astronomical objects may be seen. The Observatory is located on Wakefield Road (Rt. 82) less than a quarter of a mile west of Route 700 in Hiram.

The annual Fall Bazaar will be held at the Burton Congregational Church on Oct 12 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. There will be crafts, plant sale, bake sale and rummage sale. Lunch will be served all day. The menu includes chicken salad sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, hot dogs, and delicious homemade soups and homemade pies. Full Moon Field Station Talk

Interesting ecological research and projects being accomplished at the Hiram College Field Station will be highlighted during a series of Full Moon Field Station Talks, Oct 18th at 7pm. All talks will be held at the Frohring Lab Building at the James H. Barrow Field Station on Wheeler Rd. (Wheeler Rd. runs between SR 305 and SR 82 in Garrettsville) and are free and open to the public. Topics include air quality in our region, amphibians as ecological indicators, bird conservation and much more. The first talk will highlight the collaborative work of Hiram College and Davey Resource Group to restore the floodplain of a local creek. The Eagle Creek Restoration Project was designed to improve water quality, slow the flow of floodwaters and enhance the surrounding habitat for plants and animals. Mantua Farmers Market Salsa Contest

On Oct 21st the Mantua Farmers Market is hosting a Football-Salsa Contest. There are three categories to enter: mild, medium, hot. All salsa is to be made from scratch! You may make extra salsa to sell. A list of ingredients must be on any salsa sold. There is no charge to enter, or sell salsa. Corn chips will be provided. Build a Birdhouse

Children and adults welcome! Oct 26th from 9 am- 12 noon. $25 Fee is only charged for those building boxes, so parents can attend with children. Spend the morning with Master Gardener Chris Pappas, who will guide you through the process of building a wooden birdhouse decorated with natural items. While in class you will learn how to attract birds to your yard using different types of boxes and nesting materials. Learn what size holes and boxes attract different birds. You will also learn how to attain a certified wildlife habitat and where to place your birdhouse. Light refreshments provided. 88th Annual Cake Walk

Newton Falls Kiwanis Club’s 88th Annual Cake Walk will take place on Oct 31st. Festivities begin with the Trail of Treats around town sponsored by local businesses. The Halloween Costume Contest will run from 6:45-7:00 pm. Local businesses have contributed many, many prizes. The cake walk will follow. Newton Falls Kiwanis Club thanks all friends, helpers, businesses, and clubs who donate the cakes and help with the event. Donors, please drop off cakes at 16 West Broad Street, two doors east of Covered Bridge Inn, beginning at 8 a.m. on Thursday, October 31. The Rarest Forest

We will hike into the White Pine Bog Forest near Burton, considered by ecologists to be the rarest forest in Ohio, Nov 2nd from 9-11:30am. The area is owned by The Nature Conservancy and is not open to the general public. Some of the towering pines may be 300 years old. This walk also will include a visit to a rare glacial bog lake, another natural feature of the Burton Wetlands complex. Leader: naturalist Bob Faber. Fee: $8 for members of the Friends of the Hiram College Field Station ($12 for non-members). Pre-registration is required as this hike is limited to only 12 people. Bring gently used or new children’s and adult books, collectibles, comic books, CDs, DVDs, audio books on CD, puzzles and games for adults and children, sheet music, coffee table books, and prints to the Geauga West Library during regular library hours. No textbooks or encyclopedias, please. A receipt for your donation is available. Funds raised from the book sale support adult and children’s programming at the Geauga West Library. St. Anselm Christmas Boutique will be Nov 9, from 9am-4pm. St. Anselm’s Women’s Guild will hold its Annual Christmas Boutique at St. Anselm Church, 13013 Chillicothe Rd., Chesterland. There will be over 80 vendors from the area who will be displaying their specialties. Take a break from shopping and stop at the snack bar or the bake sale for delicious homemade goodies. Your $1.00 donation for admission entitles you to a chance to win a door prize throughout the day. There will also be a Chinese Raffle with several great prizes. Tickets are 3 for $1.00. Winners need not be present.

Spend the evening at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium to support regional efforts to protect wildlife, with special focus on the exciting regional work to protect the Spotted Turtles! The WildNite4WildLife: Northeast Ohio Wildlife Benefit will be held Nov 15th from 6-9 pm, with tickets available through http://wild4ever.org. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $16 for children, with age 2 and under free – just a nickel more expensive than general admission to the aquarium, but all will go to benefit a good cause! Half of ticket sales will go to the sponsor organization of your choice in the form of conservation grants; the other half goes directly to Spotted Turtle work.
