5K Race / 1 Mile Fun Run / Walk

Register Today!

The Garrettsville SummerFest and the Friends of Melana Foundation (www.stopkidscancer.org) is planning the 3rd Annual 5k Race and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk.  It will be held on June 30th, in downtown Garrettsville at 9:00 AM. Come out and support a great cause.  All proceeds from the event go towards research for the most dreaded childhood disease, glioma brain cancer.  Currently research for this disease is grossly underfunded. Race registration can be made on-line at www.summerfest5k.eventbrite.com.  Walkers are welcome to participate in both events.  Participants are encouraged to obtain pledge donations.  Pledge forms can be obtained on the website and all pledge monies can be turned in the day of the event.

This summer one day of each week we will be serving lunch at the Mantua Village Park.  Picnic in the park is free & open to all, kids and adults.  Serving Thursdays starting on June 20th through August 1st.  (Skip July 4th) Serving times are 12:00pm to 1:30pm. Youth cheerleading uniform fittings will be June 21st and June 27th at the Garrettsville Village Park from 5-7pm. All money will be due at this time. Please plan on attending one of these dates even if you do not need a new uniform, we will be ordering warm ups at the same time. Annual Chicken BBQ & Yard sale

The Lake Milton Presbyterian Church will hold its annual Chicken BBQ and sale on June 22nd at 942 Grandview Road in Lake Milton. The yard sale will be from 9am-6pm, with the Chicken BBQ from 12-6. The menu will consist of ½ chicken cooked over an open fire (plain or BBQ), parsley potatoes, choice of side dishes, roll & butter, homemade dessert and beverage. Ice cream, Cookies and Video

The Mantua Restoration Society is holding a fundraiser at the Mantua Center School (just north of SR82 on Center Road).  Doors open at 5pm, with ice cream and cookies available, and an opportunity to purchase tickets ($1 each or 6 for $5) on a unique raffle quilt created by Ellie Monroe, combining a depiction of the school and traditional pieced blocks.  At 7pm a video, “Sojer Boys: Portage County’s Connection to the Civil War” will be shown.  A donation of $5 per individual or $10 for a family will cover food and video.  Help us preserve our historic building.

 

Windham Athletic Boosters Casino Bus Trip

The Windham Athletic Boosters are hosting a casiono bus trip to Presque Isle in Erie, PA. All proceeds benefit the building of the baseball/softball field. Bus leaves from Windham High School at 2pm and returns by 11 pm.  $40 per ticket. Each person receives $35 free game play.

Amateur Radio Field Day Event

The Portage County Amateur Radio Service (PCARS) will be holding its annual Field Day event at the Ravenna City Park on Oakwood Street in Ravenna from 2 pm on June 22 thru 2 pm on June 23. Field Day is sponsored nationally by the American Radio Relay League as a field operation for ham radio operators who provide emergency communications as well as a public demonstration of amateur radio activities. The Rotary Club of Mantua is sponsoring the 9th annual Farmers Market. The location will be at the Christ Lutheran Church parking lot at 10827 S.R 44, in Mantua.  The market will run every Saturday, from June 22 – October 12. The hours will be 9am-12:30pm.  The cost is $5.00 if you sign up for 8 week-ends or more.  For those who sign up for fewer the cost is $7.00. Secret Garden: A private blend of art and nature

Visit the beautiful Draime Estate Gardens on the north edge of Warren from 10:00-11:30am. This private estate is closed to the public and its specialty gardens are managed by Kent State University. A variety of rare and native plants are found in the well planned perennial garden, the formal English and Italian gardens, conifer collection, walled gardens, and water gardens. The grounds also contain a unique sculpture collection by Caroline Stacey. Limited enrollment. Hiking Fee: $8 for members of Friends of the Field Station ($12 for non-members). Youth Fishing Education Program

The Eagle Creek Conservation Club is presenting a free fishing clinic for all boys and girls ages 4 to 15 on June 29from 9:30am to 2pm. The program is aimed at teaching the basic fishing techniques needed to help kids get the most enjoyment out of their time spent on the water. The class is broken up into four segments, each lasting approximately 20 minutes. Anyone wishing to attend the event MUST PRE-REGISTER by June 22. Spaces for this event are limited, so get your reservation made as soon as possible. The class will take place at the Eagle Creek Conservation Club, 5525 Eagle Creek Road, Leavittsburg, Ohio, 44430. Ride and Raise funds for our local Veterans.

Motorcyclists can participate in a 2-hour scenic ride through beautiful Geauga County on Sunday, June 30, 2013. The ride starts at Geauga County Fairgrounds in Burton, OH (14373 N Cheshire St) and will be led by Sheriff Dan McClelland and his dog, “Midge”. Registration opens at 8:00am and the $25.00 per motorcycle fee includes breakfast. What’s all the Racquet?

If you have wanted to pick-up, dust off, or rediscover your tennis savvy, July may be the month for you. Every Saturday in July from 8 till 9am, there will be a very informal tennis “Clinic”, on the courts in Windham Park. Alan Finn in co-operation with the Parks department and supported by the Windham UMC, will help teach the “basics” of the game. There is no age restriction, but we will only be going over the fundamentals of the game. There is no fee, and some equipment is available for use if needed. Have experience, but having a hard time finding others who play, stop by @ 9am after the clinic.

Annual 5K Freedom Run & 1 Mile Mutt Strut will be July 7th. Race sponsored by Freedom Greyhound Rescue of Aurora.  Registration time: 8am.  Race time: 9am. The 27th Annual Spelling Bee sponsored by Trumbull Retired Teachers will be held on July 11, at 1 pm at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds on Everett-Hull Road . Crestwood Primary School (CPS), in conjunction with their PTO, is offering Safety Town for Fall 2013 kindergarteners. The program will run from August 5 – 9 at CPS from 9 – 11:30 am and will cover fire, bus, playground safety, stranger awareness and other important topics to help your child learn to stay safe.
