Walk On: Rotary Golf Event Raises Funds for Walking Trail

Garrettsville – One of the more famous quotes about sports is attributed to Mark Twain, saying, “Golf is a good walk spoiled.” Alas, this is quoted in the Reader’s Digest in 1948, but Twain died in 1910, so he probably had very little to do with the sentiment.

Neither did the participants in the Tom Collins Memorial Rotary Trail event on June 2, 2023 at SugarBush Golf Club, Garrettsville. They had a fine time on a fine day, in good company, for a good cause. They all came–twenty-three teams signed up–to have a good time, enjoy the sport, have lunch and dinner and support the fund-raising drive to construct a walking trail in Garrettsville’s South Street (Bill Phelps Park) Park in memory of Tom Collins, who had been striving during his time on Garrettsville’s village council, to make the village a more walkable and healthful community. Principal commercial sponsors of the event were Cliff’s Auto Body, Great Lakes Cheese, Daystar Ford and a new local enterprise, Bella Dawn Events. A whole raft of local sponsors made most-appreciated donations as well.

After dinner, there were prizes awarded, a 50/50 jackpot–which was generously tossed back into the kitty, souvenir photo memorabilia for each team, and probably plenty of excuses to go around regarding the scores.

Pretty much a fine illustration of this year’s Rotary motto :”Imagine Rotary & what we can do together.”
