Volunteer For Adult Literacy Tutor Workshop

Portage County – Adult learners need your help and you can make a significant difference in someone’s life just by donating three hours of your time a week.   If you are a caring person who wants to help, who believes that adults can learn, has empathy, patience, flexibility, and are versatile, then you are the person we need.

An orientation and a fourteen (14) hour workshop is provided and required to prepare you for one-on-one tutoring in reading and writing.  A certified teaching staff is available to guide and assist you, and the training and tutoring materials are free.  The rewards are great.  Quoting Dr. Laubach, Literacy Pioneer Founder, “The greatest thrill I have had is to see the joy in someone’s face when they learn to read.”

The need for reading tutors is essential in Portage County, because there are approximately 8,000 adults who are not able to read, do a simple math problem, or read a story to their child.  Not only is this a tragedy for these individuals, the consequences are staggering for communities.  The cost to companies, industries, social agencies, and health care providers run into billions of dollars each year.  With your help we can provide a better way of life to our adult learners, and give them the education they need to become better citizens, family members, and employees.
The Portage County Literacy Coalition will be sponsoring a Tutor Workshop on August 29th, 31st, and September 3rd.   For further information or to register, please contact the Portage County Literacy Coalition at 330-235-0020
