Nelson Ledges, one of the famous beauty spots of northern, Ohio, is now owned by the state and will be used as a park.
Announcement was made that the final steps in the transaction had been taken and the property consisting of forty-six acres of enormous sandstone rocks, jagged and worn with age, and with chasms from ten to fifty feet deep, had at last become the property of the state, and henceforth would be used for park purposes under state supervision.
The property has been owned for several by the Portage Silica Company, operators of the Silica plant for the production of sand and gravel, their plant being located a mile or more east of the Ledges. The price paid by the state was $10,000.
Because of the change in ownership general satisfaction prevails on the part of all who were interested in seeing this scenic spot retained in its original condition.
It was through the efforts of the civic committee of the Garrettsville Study Club that the County Representative, P. L. Green of Hiram and J. J. Jackson of Garrettsville became interested in the idea of having the state become the owner of Nelson Ledges (1926) so to retain its natural beauty.
