Windham – The Windham Student Council will hold its First Annual Windham, Camp James A. Garfield Joint Military Training Center Half- Marathon and 5K Race. The race will be held at Camp James A. Garfield Joint Military Training Center (Camp JAG) formerly known as Camp Ravenna. The race will be held on Veterans’ Day, Sunday, November 11, 2018 starting at 9:00 am. All races will start and finish at the high school. The proceeds from the race will benefit Wags4Warriers and the Windham Food Pantry. They are planning to start a soup pantry inside the school to help students.
Registration for the half-marathon is limited to the first 500 runners (due to facilities restrictions) and must be done online at www.gopherarun.com prior to race day. The cost for the half marathon is $50. The 5K race can be done online as well, but one can also register for that race only, on the day of the race. There is no limit to how many runners for that race. The entry fee for the 5k race is $25 pre-registered and $30 on the day of the event. Both races will be held at Camp JAG, which was one of the country’s largest World War II weapons and ammunitions plant. During its time of operation in 1942-1945 it employed over 14,000 Ohioans.
Those who have registered for the half-marathon will receive a tech t-shirt and a swag package, while 5k entrants will receive a cotton t-shirt and a swag package. Those that finish the race will receive a special edition dog tag finisher’s medal. Awards will be presented to the top finishers.
Student council held a spring 5K race and wanted to do a fall race as well. They really were trying to find a way to include a half-marathon too. After some discussion, they figured what better way to honor veterans than to have it on Veterans Day and have the race at Camp JAG.
