American Legion Breakfast

Mondays

Breakfast every Monday at the American Legion Post #674.  Time: 7:30 to 11:00 a.m. Place 9130 Center Street in Windham.  Carry out available.  Call 326-3188.

Community Center Closed For Winter

There will be no more Community Center days at the old Mantua Center School until March.  The committee thanks all those who have come this past year,  adnd wishes you a safe and healthy winter.  Watch for publicity about reopening in early March.

Winter Clothing Drive

Now

Coats, hats, gloves, boots, etc. will be gladly accepted at Life Church Assembly of God, 10280 St. Rt. 88, Garrettsville, across from JAG Schools. All donations will be delivered to The Salvation Army, located at Renaissance Family Center, 9005 Wilverne Dr., Windham. All gently-used, clean winter clothes will be accepted. Donations will be distributed through RFC to families in need.

Christmas Open House

Upton Association will sponsor the annual Christmas Open House on Dec 5th from 6-8pm. Open Houses are free and open to the public. This year’s theme is Toys, Trees, and Teddy Bears. The home of suffragette Harriet Taylor Upton is located on 380 Mahoning Avenue NW in Warren. Phone 330-395-1840 or visit the web at www.uptonhouse.org. Board members of the Upton Association decorate the individual rooms of the historic home and displays change every year. Upton House is also available as a rental facility and sell tribute bricks for the Women’s Park as a unique Christmas gift.

Soup Supper

The Legion/Auxiliary Soup Supper will be Dec 5th at the Mantua Village Park Lodge at 6pm. Public is welcome to enjoy a variety of homemade soups, salads and desserts. Cost is $7.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. 

Gift & Craft Show

Hiram Farm Living and Learning Community Holiday Craft and Gift Sale  will be held Friday, Dec. 5 and Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014 from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at 11543 Garfield Road, Hiram, OH 44234. While teaching skills of compassion, teamwork, motivation and trust we create  unique gifts and decorations.

Spaghetti Dinner

Windham American Legion spaghetti dinner will be Dec 6th from 4-7pm. Menu includes spaghetti, meatballs, garlic bread and dessert. Cost is $7.50 for adults, $5.00 for kids 5-12 and free under 5 years. 50/50 will be drawn at 7:00, winner need not be present. 

Holiday Bazaar

Wayland Community Church, 6355 Wayland Road, Wayland, Ohio is having their First Annual Holiday Bazaar and Craft Sale on Dec 6th from 9am – 5pm.  A Chinese Auction, a bake sale and lunch items will be available in addition to crafts and wares that vendors will have for sale.  To reserve a table or for additional questions, please contact Deanna Cottrell at 330-620-1265.

Breakfast with Santa

Community Support at Mary Yoder’s

 Mary Yoder’s Amish Kitchen is reaching out to help those who may struggle to enjoy the holiday season.  On December 6th, beginning at 3:00 pm, Mary Yoder’s will be hosting a Chinese Auction Benefit, with all proceeds from the auction going to support Shop With a Cop and the food pantry in Middlefield.   Along with the auction, guests will enjoy a boxed lunch which includes a choice of a chicken salad sandwich or a ham sandwich, chips, and a cookie.  Coffee and punch will be provided also.Bidding is from 3:00 to 5:00 pm; the drawing begins at 5:00. Admission tickets, which include the boxed lunch and 10 complimentary auction tickets, are on sale for $15.00 at Mary Yoder’s or online at www.maryyodersamishkitchen.com.   Everyone is invited to come, enjoy the afternoon, cross some items off your Christmas list, and most importantly, help your neighbor.

Fill A Cruiser

The Garrettsville Police Department will be holding a Fill A Cruiser event on December 6th from 10am to 3pm at the Garrettsville Save A Lot.  Nonperishable foods will be collected for the Garrettsville Nelson Community Cupboard.  Any cash donations will go to the Hiram Police Department Shop with a cop program.  

Contra Dance

Troy Township Contra Dance will be Dec 6th at the Troy Community House (13950 Main Market Road / Route 422; Burton, Ohio 44021). All ages join in the irresistibly fun atmosphere of contra dance and live folk music by the band “Mr. Haney”.  Lesson at 6:30pm.  Dance 7:30-10:30pm.  Adult $8, student $5, family $25.

Tree Identification Hike

Pizza with Santa

Come meet Santa at the annual Kiwanis of the Western Reserve Pizza with Santa Dec 6th from 10:00am-12:30pm in the Hiram Christian Church Fellowship Hall.  Tickets are $3.00, children 2 & under FREE.  Tickets can be purchased at Cortland Bank in Mantua, Hiram College Bookstore, Middlefield Bank in Garrettsville & Mantua or at the door. There will be reindeer games, songs, face painting, ornament making, cookie decorating!  Secret Santa Shop for children sponsored by the Hiram College Bookstore, holiday gifts $1.00-$5.00.

Christmas Craft

Monthly Dance

Portage County Chapter #600 Parents Without Partners monthly dance will be Dec 6th from 7:30-11pm at Ritchie Memorial Shelter House, 109 W. Ave. in Tallmadge. Open to public. The theme for this dance is Winter Wonderland, ladies are encouraged to dress semi-formally. Cost is $6 for members and $8 for non-members. For more information about PWP call Warrine 330-322-9559. 

Scotch Doubles Fundraiser

There will be a Scotch Doubles  fundraiser on December 6th at 

Skylanes Bowling starting at  9:00 p.m.  This is a fundraiser to benefit the Troy Smith family. The cost to bowl is $50.00 per couple for 3 games, shoe rental, pizza, beer, pop or coffee.  Other food items will also be served.  The cost for those that do not want to bowl and just to join in will be $12.00, this does include pizza, beer, pop and coffee.  A 50/50 raffle and basket auction will also take place.  If you can’t attend and still want to help out this family, please contact P. Craft & Vendor Show

Craft and Vendor Show at First Church of God, 426 W. Broad St. in Newton Falls will be on Dec 6th from 9am-4pm. Some vendors include Bug-A-Boo Boutique, The Pampered Chef, Pink Zebra, Scentsy, Premier Designs, Wildtree and Thirty-One, Plus handmade items, new shoes, baked goods and more. Stop on in, lunch served and do some Christmas shopping! Something for everyone!

Scotch Doubles

Smith Family Benefit Scotch Doubles sponsored by Garfield PTO will be Dec 6th at 9:00pm at Skylane Bowling. $50 per couple includes 3 games bowling, shoe rental, pizza, beer, pop or coffee, basket auction and 50/50. Encore Program

The Women’s Council of Hiram College is hosting an Encore Program (Nostalgic Inspiration) / Luncheon on Dec 6th at the Twinsburg Hilton Inn.  At 11:30 am. punch and a cash bar will be available; the gourmet luncheon (most dietary concerns can be addressed) will be served at noon, with the program following.  Everyone knows the story of Scrooge in Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL, but wait until you hear the inspirational tale told by Rev. John Ferris as he recites it from memory.  He wants you to pretend that you’re listening to the radio as folks once did, as he uses the gifts of his voice, face, and body language to share this story. Fill-A-Cruiser

Windham Police Department will hold a fill-a-cruiser at the Dollar General Store in Windham, Dec 7th from 1pm until 5pm. Items donated will be used in the community.

Sea Dreams

The ensemble Shanua and Friends will give an informal show titled “Sea Dreams” at Hiram College on Dec 7th at 3:00 p.m.   The location is Garfield Meeting House (Koritansky Hall).  Shanua features Dermot Somerville, guitar, flute and vocals, and ?lle Laido, keyboard and vocals.  They will be joined by Becca Rhoades, fiddle, Tina Dreisbach, flute and concertina, Paul Dreisbach, oboe and uilleann pipes, singers Tim Regan, John Clark, and Krista Parran, and poetry reader Rebecca Knab.   The free event is sponsored by The Hiram Community Trust and the Hiram College Music Department.  Garfield Meeting House (Koritansky Hall) is located at the corner of Routes 82 and 700 in Hiram Village.  There is street parking as well as a nearby lot at Hiram Christian Church.  For further information call 330-569-5294 or email music@hiram.edu.

A Christmas Remembrance

A Christmas Remembrance on Dec 7th at 6pm, presented at the Garrettsville Church of God, 12888 State Route 88, (Nelson Twp, North of State Route 305), Garrettsville, Ohio 44231. We invite you and your family to come and personally light a candle in honor of your loved one.  Rev Kevin Crouch will share of the hope we have during the difficulties we may face at the holidays after losing a loved one.  Please call 330-527-2942 so that we are able to reserve that special candle for your family.  A cookie reception will be held at 5pm., and the program will begin at 6 pm.

Christmas Concert

St. Ambrose Church in Garrettsville is presenting their annual Christmas Concert on Dec 7th at 6pm. The Bell Choir, Adult Vocal Choir, and the O.K. Chorale Children’s Choir will present a delightful program of sacred and secular Advent and Christmas music.

Trip to “Christmas City”

Join St. Anselm Young of Heart in “Christmas City,” Bethlehem, PA, on December 10-12. Movie with Santa

Portage Faith United Methodist Church is hosting their 2nd Annual “Movie with Santa” Dec 12th at 6:30pm.  Bring the children to this free event, to see the Dr. Seuss’ “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”, with refreshments and games provided.  There will be a special visit by Santa, with opportunities to sit on Santa’s lap and to get pictures taken with Santa and the Grinch. Youth Boys Basketball Sign-Ups

Ravenna Parks and Recreation is offering youth boys basketball. Teams will be formed by the following grades: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6.  Practices and games are held at various schools in Ravenna.  Practices begin in January and games are held February through beginning of April.  Ravenna city taxpayer fee is $40; non-city taxpayer fee is $48.   Registration deadline is Dec 12th in office and Dec 14th for Internet   Pre-Registration is a must at the Ravenna Parks and Recreation Office at 530 N. Junior Ravens Basketball Sign-Ups

Ravenna Parks and Recreation is offering youth basketball for both girls and boy. Participants will learn the fundamentals and skills of the sport of basketball in a fun, age appropriate atmosphere using situations under the direction on Sonny Tilden, Ravenna High School Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach.  Practices begin in January 4 through February 8 on Sundays from 3:45pm to 5pm.Ravenna city taxpayer fee is $20; non-city taxpayer fee is $25. RFC Craft Show

Pork Dinner

Portage County 4-H & Mantua Masonic Lodge are hosting a Pork  dinner Saturday December 13th, 2014, from 5-7PM.  Dinner includes Pork, mashed potatoes, green beans or corn, applesauce, bread, dessert, and your choice of coffee or punch. Breakfast with Santa

The Palmyra Fire Department and the Palmyra Fireflies will be hosting the 8th Annual “Breakfast with Santa.” The breakfast will be held at the Palmyra fire station on Dec 13th from 8-11am. Santa will be arriving at 8:30 am on a fire truck!  Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage and a beverage. Cost is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for ages 4 – 10 and 3 and under are FREE.  Along with Breakfast with Santa each family will receive one 4×6 picture with Santa. Additional pictures will be available for $2.00 each. Santa will have a small surprise for each child as well.  Non-perishable items are also being collected to help an adopted family this year during the holiday season. We encourage all to come and join the fun with Santa and the Palmyra Fire Department.

Christmas Party

The combined American Legion/Auxiliary Christmas party will be Dec 14th at 5pm at the Mantua Village Park Lodge. Members and guests are asked to bring a dish to pass, table service, and a donation of food or paper product for the 4C’s

Indoor Baseball Camp

Youngstown State University and Sluggers Indoor Baseball are hosting six week baseball camps starting Jan  4 at Youngstown State, and March 8 at the Sluggers Indoor Baseball facility. Youngstown State coach, Craig Antush, and Director of Operations at the U.S. Baseball Academy, Joe Marker, will direct their respective sites in conjunction with U.S. Baseball Academy.  Classes are available for players in grades 1-12 and are limited to six players per coach. Sessions are offered in advanced hitting, pitching, catching, fielding and base running. Space is limited. Registration is now under way. Stargazing Night

Join us on  January 24th, 2014 7:00 pm- 9:00pm as we look upward towards the heavens. A telescope will be available for viewing. You are encouraged to bring your own viewing devices as well.
