Portage Senior Citizens Opportunities
Weekdays
The Portage County Senior Center, located at 705 Oakwood St., in Ravenna has many daily opportunities for local seniors to enjoy. On any given day, you can enjoy, bingo, Tai Chi, educational programs, art class, corn hole, cards & dominos with friends, and they even have a pool table. They serve lunch daily (by reservation) and are open M-F from 9-3. If you would like more information you may call them at 330-297-3456.

Auburn Firedevils Craft Fair Fundraiser
Still searching for consultants and crafters for the craft show scheduled for Saturday, November 10 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. This fundraiser for the Auburn Township Volunteer Fire Department will be held at Adams Hall, Auburn Township. The Phyllis Zumkehr Portage County Clothing Center, which is located at 3377 State Route 59, Ravenna, is looking for volunteers to help with sorting, hanging and stocking clothing and helping customers. JAG Alumni Banquet
Reservations Due Aug. 31
It’s time to mail in reservations for the 13th annual James A. Garfield Alumni banquet. Payments and reservations must be received no later than Aug. 31 for the banquet, which will take place Sept. 15 at James A. Garfield Elementary School. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and there will be another wonderful catered dinner from Guido’s of Ravenna served at 6 p.m. The event is open to graduates and anyone who attended Freedom, Garrettsville, James A. Garfield, and Nelson schools. The following classes will be honored this year: 1938, 1948, 1958, 1968, 1978, and 1988.The cost is $18 per person. Crafters Wanted

Grief Support Group

Grief Group meets every Sunday at 3 pm. The meetings are held at Garrettsville United Methodist Church and last about an 1 – 1 ½ hours. Everyone is welcome. For questions you can call the church at 330-527-2055.

Observatory Viewing Night
July 21
Stephens Memorial Observatory of Hiram College will be open for public observing Saturday, July 21, from 9:30 to 11:00 PM. Given good skies, visitors will see wonderful views of the Moon, giant planet Jupiter with moons of its own, and the “ring world” Saturn. Other objects of interest, such as star clusters, will also be sought, using the Observatory’s vintage telescope. Cloudy skies at the scheduled starting time cancel the event and in that case, the observatory will not open. No reservations are required and there is no admission fee for observatory public nights. The Observatory is located on Wakefield Road (Rt. 82) less than a quarter of a mile west of Route 700 in Hiram. There is no parking at the Observatory. Visitors may park on permissible side streets near the Post Office, a short distance east of the observatory.

Pricetown UMC Vacation Bible School

The Pricetown United Methodist Church, 4640 Pritchard-Ohltown Rd., Newton Falls, will be holding its annual Vacation Bible School, July 23 thru July 27, 2018, from 6pm to 8:30pm. Please join them for a week of fun and fellowship. This year’s theme is: “Moose on the Loose”. Youngsters (age 4 thru 12th grade) are invited to meet Jesus. Rolling River Rampage
July 23-27
“Rolling River Rampage” Vacation Bible School will be held at the Wayland Community Church, 6355 Wayland Road, Wayland from July 23 – 27. The adventure begins each evening at 6:00 p.m. sharp and lasts until 8:30 p.m. This year’s theme focuses on Isaiah 43:2. All children age 3 through those who have finished grade 6 are welcome. There is no charge to attend. Our mission this year will benefit the Portage County Foster Care program. Permaculture & Sustainable Gardening

August 4th, 9am- 12pm. PERMACULTURE AND SUSTAINABLE GARDENING. Join Portage County OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteers, Mary Lou Holly and Pamm McDowell as they discuss the principles of Permaculture design and creating a more holistic garden. They will give tips and advice for less weeding, attracting beneficial insect and animals using plant guilds to protect gardens, and rain water harvesting to reduce water needs. The program will also cover the importance of planting perennial vegetables, fruit, and flowers as part of embracing Permaculture and sustainability.
