Grief Group meets every Sunday at 3 pm. The meetings are held at Garrettsville United Methodist Church and last about 1 – 1 ½ hours. Everyone is welcome. For questions you can call the church at 330-527-2055.

Recovery after Suicide Loss Support Group

If you or someone you know has lost a loved one to suicide, we invite you to attend a free monthly support group to find acceptance, information, and inspiration. The support group meets the last Wednesday of each month at the Kent Free Library located at 312 W. Main Street, Kent from 6:30-8pm. Senior Center Corn Hole Sessions

The Portage County Senior Center is continuing their Corn Hole session each Friday morning. They start playing at 10 and usually wrap up by 11:30. The game is played indoors and there are always lots of laughs, while also getting a little exercise. Seniors are welcome to join in on any Friday. Portage Senior Citizens Opportunities

The Portage County Senior Center, located at 705 Oakwood St., in Ravenna has many daily opportunities for local seniors to enjoy. On any given day, you can enjoy, bingo, Tai Chi, educational programs, art class, corn hole, cards & dominos with friends, and they even have a pool table. Free Youth Shoot

The Streetsboro Sportsman Association is hosting a free youth introduction to firearms course on July 20th and 21st from 9AM to 2PM at 11280 Bloom Rd. ,Nelson township 44231. The event is for youth 10-18 years of age. Shooters must have a responsible adult present at all times. All firearms and ammunition will be provided. The 20th will be for first time shooters and the 21st will be for youth who have participated at previous events.. The attendees will have instruction in the safe handling of firearms followed by the opportunity to shoot. . Lunch is provided. Space is limited. “To Mars and Beyond” Vacation Bible School will be held at the Wayland Community Church, 6355 Wayland Road, Wayland from July 22 – 26. The fun begins each evening at 6:00 p.m. sharp and lasts until 8:30 p.m. This year’s theme takes our “Voyagers” on a space travel adventure to explore where God’s power can take them as they will learn from our memory verse of Ephesians 3:20. Garrettsville Cemetery Association Meeting

The Garrettsville Cemetery Association will meet on Wednesday, July 24 at 6:30 pm in the James A. Garfield Historical Society Building on Main Street. Updates on the restored stones and possible fundraisers will be discussed and plans made for the September tour in the Baptist Cemetery during the Historical Society’s “Cemetery Summer Series.” The meeting is open to the public and any interested residents are welcome to attend.

Anyone with historic photos of Freedom Township or the surrounding areas is invited to a Portage County Memories Scanning Session from 9 am to 11 am July 29 at the Freedom Community Center, 8940 S.R. 700. General interest photos taken from the 1800s to 1939 will be accepted for digital scanning. All photos will be returned to their owners during the scanning session. Addiction has affected countless lives in our community. On average, 130 Americans die every day from opioid overdose. Almost everyone now knows a neighbor, a friend, a sibling, a son or a daughter struggling with addiction. Learn About Ohio’s Historic Canals

Danny Back will give a PowerPoint presentation on Ohio’s Canal Era: 1832-1913 at 7 pm Aug. 13 at the Shalersville Town Hall at the intersection of SR 303 and 44. Mr. Back is a nationally known expert on river history, canals, and steamboats. The presentation includes many rare and unique scenes and draws on Mr. Back’s extensive research. Mr. Back’s many accomplishments include presenting programs aboard the Delta Queen and other historic steamboats, appearing in the PBS documentary “Take the River,” and consulting with several museums and historical societies. This program is co-hosted by the Freedom Township Historical Society and the Shalersville Historical Society. It is free and open to the public.

Senior Celebration

The Portage Senior Services Network has been diligently planning for this year’s “Senior Celebration” and has a date and location. The event will be held on Tuesday, September 10th at Underwood Hall in The Kent American Legion. This is an annual event where we celebrate and crown one senior “King” and “Queen” who goes above and beyond for their community. The committee is working to keep the ticket price at a low $10 again this year, and tkts. should be available by the week of August 5th. Nominating applications can be picked up at Home Instead Senior Care or The Portage County Senior Center. The theme is “Senior Pick of the Patch” and there will be square dancers, a luncheon, and lots of freebies and gift baskets available. Please be on the lookout for future information as it becomes available.
