Portage Senior Citizens Opportunities

Weekdays

The Portage County Senior Center, located at 705 Oakwood St., in Ravenna has many daily opportunities for local seniors to enjoy. On any given day, you can enjoy, bingo, Tai Chi, educational programs, art class, corn hole, cards & dominos with friends, and they even have a pool table. They serve lunch daily (by reservation) and are open M-F from 9-3. If you would like more information you may call them at 330-297-3456. 

Grief Support Group

Sundays

Grief Group meets every Sunday at 3 pm. The meetings are held at Garrettsville United Methodist Church and last about 1 – 1 ½ hours. Everyone is welcome. For questions you can call the church at 330-527-2055.

Men on Mondays

Mondays

Men on Mondays, a men’s Bible study, is held every Monday from 6:45 – 8 pm at the Cellar Door Coffee Shop in Garrettsville. Coffee and pastry provided at no charge.

4F’s: Everyone Welcome

Senior Lunches

Welcome seniors! Come and enjoy hot, nutritious lunches at the Farmington Senior Center, 150 College St., West Farmington. Lunches are served Tuesdays through Fridays (except the 3rd Tuesday of the month) and a donation of  $2.25. Please call ahead by three days for lunches – 330-889-2733.

Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group Meetings

1st Tuesday of Month

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter makes Alzheimer’s caregiver support groups available free of charge, open to all caregivers, family members, and friends with a loved one affected by the disease or another form of dementia. First Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m., UH Portage Medical Center, 6847 North Chestnut St. (Room A), Ravenna. Groups meet monthly. Start Talking Portage is a group of public and community partners who work together as a team to help fight the drug epidemic.  We have moved back to our original location and meeting day for our monthly meeting – The Christ Lutheran Church, 10827 State Route 44, Mantua, OH 44255.   Come and see what we are all about!  Meetings are the 4th Tuesday of each month, 6:30 p.m.

Recovery after Suicide Loss Support Group

Last Weds of Month

If you or someone you know has lost a loved one to suicide, we invite you to attend a free monthly support group to find acceptance, information, and inspiration. The support group meets the last Wednesday of each month at the Kent Free Library located at 312 W. Main Street, Kent from 6:30-8pm. The group is sponsored by the Portage County Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County. For more information call 330.673.1756 ext 201.

Story Time In Mantua

Thursdays

Children ages 2-5 are invited along with their accompanying adult (siblings are welcome too) every Thursday to STORY TIME, 10:30 -11:30 a.m. at the Mantua Center Christian Church, 4118 St.Rt. 82.  No need to sign up, simply drop in any Thursday.  This program follows the Crestwood School schedule and meets every Thursday that Crestwood is in session.

This FREE meal is open to all residents in Mantua, Hiram, Garrettsville and surrounding areas.  Anyone who needs to stretch their food dollars or even if you just love a homemade meal, you are cordially invited to come eat and enjoy some fellowship.  This meal is from 5-6:30pm the last Thursday of each month from January – October at Mantua Center Christian Church, 4118 S.R. 82, Mantua Center.

Recover After Loss From Substance Use Support Group

Have you lost someone you love or care about to the disease of addiction? JAG Kindergarten Registration

Baseball Umpire Class

Portage County Umpire Association is having a baseball umpire class beginning in mid February for those interested in becoming high school certified to umpire baseball. Stuffed Pork Chop Dinner

On  the 29th of February there will be a stuffed pork chop dinner at the Braceville United Methodist Church off of St. Rt. 82 in the center of Braceville. Doors open at 4:00 and we serve until 6:30 or when the food runs out.   The dinner includes mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, cole slaw, applesauce, homemade desserts, bread, coffee, tea or punch. The cost is $12.00 for adults and $4.00 for children. Take outs are available.

Auburn VFD Pancake Breakfast

March 1

Boy Scout Troop 101 will be hosting the Auburn Pancake Breakfast being held at the Auburn Volunteer Fire station from 8 am – noon on Sunday March 1st. This event is open to anyone who would like to help support our group, and will cost $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, and $5 for children 12 and under. We will be serving all you can eat regular pancakes, buckwheat pancakes, blueberry pancakes, and sausage, as well as water, orange juice, coffee, and hot chocolate.

Hambden Grange #2482 is serving an AYCE Pancake Breakfast with corn fritters, maple syrup, sausage, fruit, cocoa and coffee on Sunday, March 1st  from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon.  The Grange is located at 9778 Old State Road, Chardon. The cost is $7 for Adults and $3 for Children 10 and under.

Join us at the Parkman Community House (16295 Main Market – Rt. 422) for our annual Pancakes and Sausage Breakfasts on Sundays in March: March 1st – 8th – 15th – 22nd – 29th from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Adults eat for $8.00; children – $4.00 (Pre-schoolers are free). Take-outs are also available.  Our pancakes are served on real plates (no disposables here) and we use only real Geauga County maple syrup.  Our own secret recipe is used for our sausage patties.  You can even buy some sausage to take home and enjoy after our pancake breakfasts are done for the year.  Gather your friends and family and join us for breakfast!

Civil War Program in Freedom

March 10

The Freedom Township Historical Society will host a program on Civil War animals at 7 pm March 10 at the Freedom Community Center, 8940 S.R. 700. There will be photo slideshow of famous dogs and horses involved in the conflict and a viewing of the documentary “Horses of Gettysburg.” The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

St. Patrick’s Day Dinner

Ravenna Garden Club Spring Craft Show

The Ravenna Garden Club of Portage County Gardeners is hosting their annual Spring Craft Show on Sat. March 21, 2020 from 10:a.m.- 4:00 p.m. at 5154 South Prospect St. Ravenna, Ohio (The Portage County Garden Center.) A luncheon will be served. Raffle tickets for a raffle of crafters’ donated items will be held.  Several crafters will be available for your shopping pleasure including Easter baskets, wreaths, jewelry, crocheted items, canvas paintings, and more. Sunrise Service

April 12

Windham United Methodist  Church will be having a sunrise service at 6:30 am on Easter morning, April 12 at the  gazebo in Windham.  Bring a lawn chair.  Breakfast will be served at 7:30 am in the church fellowship hall.  In case of rain, service will be held in sanctuary of the Windham UMC.  All are welcome.
