Portage Senior Citizens Opportunities

Weekdays

The Portage County Senior Center, located at 705 Oakwood St., in Ravenna has many daily opportunities for local seniors to enjoy. On any given day, you can enjoy, bingo, Tai Chi, educational programs, art class, corn hole, cards & dominos with friends, and they even have a pool table. They serve lunch daily (by reservation) and are open M-F from 9-3. If you would like more information you may call them at 330-297-3456. 

Grief Support Group

Sundays

Grief Group meets every Sunday at 3 pm. The meetings are held at Garrettsville United Methodist Church and last about 1 – 1 ½ hours. Everyone is welcome. For questions you can call the church at 330-527-2055.

Men on Mondays

Mondays

Men on Mondays, a men’s Bible study, is held every Monday from 6:45 – 8 pm at the Cellar Door Coffee Shop in Garrettsville. Coffee and pastry provided at no charge.

Welcome seniors! Come and enjoy hot, nutritious lunches at the Farmington Senior Center, 150 College St., West Farmington. Lunches are served Tuesdays through Fridays (except the 3rd Tuesday of the month) and cost $2. Please call ahead by three days for lunches – 330-889-2733.

Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group Meetings

1st Tuesday of Month

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter makes Alzheimer’s caregiver support groups available free of charge, open to all caregivers, family members, and friends with a loved one affected by the disease or another form of dementia. First Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m., UH Portage Medical Center, 6847 North Chestnut St. (Room A), Ravenna. Groups meet monthly. 2nd Wednesday of each month through May 13, 2020) from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Maplewood Christian Church 7300 State Route 88 in Ravenna. Come experience a safe indoor environment where children ages 2 – 5 can play, craft, enjoy music and burn energy (adults stay for fun, siblings welcome).  We will not meet if Ravenna Schools are closed. Recovery after Suicide Loss Support Group

Last Weds of Month

If you or someone you know has lost a loved one to suicide, we invite you to attend a free monthly support group to find acceptance, information, and inspiration. The support group meets the last Wednesday of each month at the Kent Free Library located at 312 W. Main Street, Kent from 6:30-8pm. The group is sponsored by the Portage County Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County. For more information call 330.673.1756 ext 201.

Story Time In Mantua

Thursdays

Children ages 2-5 are invited along with their accompanying adult (siblings are welcome too) every Thursday to STORY TIME, 10:30 -11:30 a.m. at the Mantua Center Christian Church, 4118 St.Rt. 82.  No need to sign up, simply drop in any Thursday.  This program follows the Crestwood School schedule and meets every Thursday that Crestwood is in session.

Start Talking ! Portage (- ‘S T ! P’ -) is a partnership of various community      & faith-based groups, public sector representatives, & professional services members who work together, teaming up to help counter our serious regional      & (inter)national problem — the substance use & addiction epidemic. S T ! P conducts an open, free, county-wide, designated Thursday, monthly meeting, @ 6:30 p.m., centrally located for all citizen participants, @ the Ravenna Reed Memorial Library (-RML-), in its lower level ‘Carlin Room’ meeting facility,  167 East Main Street, Downtown Ravenna, Ohio. Come and see what it’s all about, help out, learn from invited S T ! P guest speakers, hear about & see progress being made, too!

This FREE meal is open to all residents in Mantua, Hiram, Garrettsville and surrounding areas.  Anyone who needs to stretch their food dollars or even if you just love a homemade meal, you are cordially invited to come eat and enjoy some fellowship.  This meal is from 5-6:30pm the last Thursday of each month from January – October at Mantua Center Christian Church, 4118 S.R. 82, Mantua Center.

Recover After Loss From Substance Use Support Group

Have you lost someone you love or care about to the disease of addiction? JAG Kindergarten Registration

Portage County Kickball League

Ravenna Parks and Recreation is excited to announce that we will be hosting a Portage County Kickball League in the spring of 2020. Registration for both teams and individuals will open December 1st. “Blue Christmas” Service

The Windham United Methodist Church, 9051 N. Main St., is inviting community members to attend its “Blue Christmas” worship service, scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, in the church’s sanctuary. The name of the service comes from the season that is supposed to be filled with joy but can often be difficult for those experiencing loss. Attendees are encouraged to invite someone struggling with grief or hardship to come with them. Everyone is welcome.

Observatory Open Night

Stephens Memorial Observatory of Hiram College will host a special Public Night Saturday, December 21, from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. The Great Orion Nebula will be the featured object on a night billed as a “holiday gift.” The observatory is usually closed for the winter but organizers wished to offer views of the nebula this year. Clear skies will be especially important for this event. Cloudy skies at the scheduled starting time cancel the event in which case, the observatory will not open. No reservations are required and there is no admission fee for observatory public nights. The Observatory is located on Wakefield Road (Rt. 82) less than a quarter of a mile west of Route 700 in Hiram. There is no parking at the Observatory. Visitors may park on permissible side streets near the Post Office, a short distance east of the observatory.

Freedom Soldiers Honor Roll Committee Meeting

Please join The Committee to Restore the Freedom Soldiers Honor Roll  in Freedom Township on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. as we honor our Veterans at the Freedom Honor Roll at the Freedom Town Hall, 8966 State Route 700. We will be hanging a wreath on the honor roll and would love to have as many veterans and residents there to show their respect to those that have served and currently serve our great country. Kids Christmas Party & Free Pictures with Santa

The Windham Church of Christ, 9837 Wolf Rd., is having a kids Christmas party with free pictures with Santa on Dec 21 from 3-5 pm. there will be Christmas crafts for kids to make, cookie decorating, and refreshments. Pictures will be sent home with the kids at the end of the party. Plan to attend with your family for a good time!

PCDL Holiday Closing

Portage County District Library (PCDL) will be closed on December 24 and 25, in observance of Christmas Eve and Christmas as well as on December 31 and January 1, 2020, in observance of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Most branch libraries will resume their normal library service hours on Friday, December 27 and January 3, respectively.

Countdown at 12 Noon

The Portage County Senior Center will hold their annual “Countdown at 12 Noon” New Year’s Eve party on Tues., Dec. 31st.   Seniors will congregate to ring in the New Year as they enjoy a variety of card games, dominoes, corn hole, etc.  All seniors are asked to bring an appetizer to share.  Sparkling cider will be provided for the countdown.  The senior center is located at 705 Oakwood St. (Floor G) in Ravenna and is open to all Portage County Seniors aged 60 and up.  For more information, they can be reached at 330-297-3456.

Poetry Reading at Garrettsville Library

Join us at the Garrettsville Library for a poetry reading by author Xandria Phillips on Saturday, January 4 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Phillips will be reading poems from their newest collection, Hull. They are the author of Reasons for Smoking, which won a 2016 Seattle review chapbook contest judged by Claudia Rankine.In addition to writing poetry, Phillips, who is from rural Ohio, is also a visual artist and an editor of Honeysuckle Press. The reading will be followed by a Q&A session and a book signing as well. This program is free and open to adults and teens. SUPER JOY: Learning To Celebrate Everyday Life.

Spaghetti Dinner & Auction

Friends of Middlefield Cub Scout Pack 3141 B.S.A. will be holding its annual Spaghetti Dinner/Auction fundraising event on Jan 24, 4:30-7:30, at the Parkman Community House on RT 422.
