Portage Senior Citizens Opportunities
Weekdays
The Portage County Senior Center, located at 705 Oakwood St., in Ravenna has many daily opportunities for local seniors to enjoy. On any given day, you can enjoy, bingo, Tai Chi, educational programs, art class, corn hole, cards & dominos with friends, and they even have a pool table. They serve lunch daily (by reservation) and are open M-F from 9-3. If you would like more information you may call them at 330-297-3456.

The Phyllis Zumkehr Portage County Clothing Center, which is located at 3377 State Route 59, Ravenna, is looking for volunteers to help with sorting, hanging and stocking clothing and helping customers. Hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.If you are interested in volunteering, contact Veronica Williamson at 330-819-9760 or email fourwildwinds@yahoo.com.

Kindergarten Registration

The James A. Garfield School District is taking reservations for Kindergarten registration for children that will turn age 5 before August 1, 2019. Registration will take place at the Elementary on Thursday, March 21, Friday, March 22 and Monday, March 25, 2019. Please call the Elementary School office at 330-527-2184 to schedule an appointment.

Grief Support Group

Grief Group meets every Sunday at 3 pm. The meetings are held at Garrettsville United Methodist Church and last about 1 – 1 ½ hours. Everyone is welcome. For questions you can call the church at 330-527-2055.

Mondays
Men on Mondays, a men’s Bible study, is held every Monday from 6:45 – 8 pm at the Cellar Door Coffee Shop in Garrettsville. Coffee and pastry will be provided at no charge.

Families Anonymous Meetings

Do you have a family member controlled by drugs or alcohol and don’t know where to turn? Families Anonymous might be the support group you need. We meet every Monday (except holidays) from 7:30 to 8:30 pm at Coleman Behavioral Services, Sue Hetrick Bldg. 3922Lovers Lane/Loomis Parkway in Ravenna. For info call Peggy 330-760-7670.

Children ages 2-5 are invited along with their accompanying adult (siblings are welcome too) every Thursday to STORY TIME, 10:30 -11:30 a.m. at the Mantua Center Christian Church, 4118 SR 82. No cost to families and fun for all! No need to sign up. This program follows the Crestwood School schedule.

6th Annual Trains in the Town Hall
December
The N Bloomfield Historical Society will be open from 2pm to 5pm every Saturday and 5pm to 8pm every Wednesday in December for the area’s largest free O27 Lionel model train show. The winter scene features a 2 level track layout in a snowy landscape. The summer side features townscapes, commercial and industrial areas. Many volunteer hours are spent constructing the more than 500 square feet of the layouts each year in the 125 year old Town Hall at 8830 Park Drive. Visitors can enjoy free popcorn, punch, cookies and coffee as they watch the trains perform. The hall is not handicap accessible. For more information call 440-685-4410.

Splendid Snow Days

A part of the Downtown Mantua Revitalization Committee’s holiday pop up shop – PPD will be on site to share what happens during winter in the parks. How do plants, animals & insects adapt to the cold? How does snow and cold affect all types of things and WHAT tracks can we spot in the snow. The Harp Through History & Top of the Hill Concert

Retirement Open House

First Congregational Church of Freedom will be hosting a Retirement Open House honoring Pastors Jim and Janie Melick on Sunday December 16th. A special church service will be held from 10:30am to 11:30 am with an Open House following the church service. All are invited to share in this special celebration.

Santa Deliveries In Garrettsville

Santa will again be making early deliveries to children in the Garrettsville-Hiram area courtesy of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club. Gifts will delivered the evening of Sunday, Dec. 23rd. There is no cost for this service, but all donations received are given to the People Tree to help others in our area. Candlelight Christmas Service

Pastors Jim and Janie Melick invite you to attend the Candlelight Christmas Service at First Congregational Church of Freedom, 8961 State Route 88 on Sunday December 23rd at 6:30p.m. This will be the last Candlelight Service by the Melicks as they are retiring at the end of the year.
