Portage Senior Citizens Opportunities

Weekdays

The Portage County Senior Center, located at 705 Oakwood St., in Ravenna has many daily opportunities for local seniors to enjoy. On any given day, you can enjoy, bingo, Tai Chi, educational programs, art class, corn hole, cards & dominos with friends, and they even have a pool table. They serve lunch daily (by reservation) and are open M-F from 9-3. If you would like more information you may call them at 330-297-3456. 

Grief Support Group

Sundays

Grief Group meets every Sunday at 3 pm. The meetings are held at Garrettsville United Methodist Church and last about 1 – 1 ½ hours. Everyone is welcome. For questions you can call the church at 330-527-2055.

Mondays

Men on Mondays, a men’s Bible study, is held every Monday from 6:45 – 8 pm at the Cellar Door Coffee Shop in Garrettsville. Coffee and pastry provided at no charge.

Welcome seniors! Come and enjoy hot, nutritious lunches at the Farmington Senior Center, 150 College St., West Farmington. Lunches are served Tuesdays through Fridays (except the 3rd Tuesday of the month) and cost $2. Please call ahead by three days for lunches – 330-889-2733.

Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group Meetings

1st Tuesday of Month

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter makes Alzheimer’s caregiver support groups available free of charge, open to all caregivers, family members, and friends with a loved one affected by the disease or another form of dementia. First Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m., UH Portage Medical Center, 6847 North Chestnut St. (Room A), Ravenna. Groups meet monthly. Recovery after Suicide Loss Support Group

Last Weds of Month

If you or someone you know has lost a loved one to suicide, we invite you to attend a free monthly support group to find acceptance, information, and inspiration. The support group meets the last Wednesday of each month at the Kent Free Library located at 312 W. Main Street, Kent from 6:30-8pm. Story Time In Mantua

Children ages 2-5 are invited along with their accompanying adult (siblings are welcome too) every Thursday to STORY TIME, 10:30 -11:30 a.m. at the Mantua Center Christian Church, 4118 St.Rt. 82.  No need to sign up, simply drop in any Thursday.  This program follows the Crestwood School schedule and meets every Thursday that Crestwood is in session.

Start Talking ! Portage (- ‘S T ! P’ -) is a partnership of various community & faith-based groups, public sector representatives, & professional services members who work together, teaming up to help counter our serious regional & (inter)national problem — the substance use & addiction epidemic. P conducts an open, free, county-wide, designated Thursday, monthly meeting, @ 6:30 p.m., centrally located for all citizen participants, @ the Ravenna Reed Memorial Library (-RML-), in its lower level Carlin Room  meeting facility,  167 East Main Street, Downtown Ravenna, Ohio. Come and see what it’s all about, help out, learn from invited S T ! P guest speakers, hear about & see progress being made, too!

This FREE meal is open to all residents in Mantua, Hiram, Garrettsville and surrounding areas.  Anyone who needs to stretch their food dollars or even if you just love a homemade meal, you are cordially invited to come eat and enjoy some fellowship.  This meal is from 5-6:30pm the last Thursday of each month from January – October at Mantua Center Christian Church, 4118 S.R. 82, Mantua Center.

Senior Indoor Corn Hole League

Fridays Through Feb 7

The Portage County Senior Center’s Winter Indoor Corn-Hole League is in full swing.  Each Friday at 10 a.m. seniors join together for a little fun, exercise and friendly competition.  The game is played on a week to week basis so seniors are welcome to join in any week they can attend.  Corn Hole will run for 6 weeks through Feb. 7th, when they’ll then look forward to Wii Bowling.  The Portage County Senior Center is located at 705 Oakwood St. (Floor G) in Ravenna and is open to all Portage Seniors aged 60 and up.  For more info they can be reached at 330-297-3456.

Recover After Loss From Substance Use Support Group

Have you lost someone you love or care about to the disease of addiction? JAG Kindergarten Registration

Baseball Umpire Class

Portage County Umpire Association is having a baseball umpire class beginning in mid February for those interested in becoming high school certified to umpire baseball. “Frozen” Quilt February  At The  Library

During the month of February, you’re invited to read a book and enter to win a “Frozen” quilt. Local quilter Nora Brant has donated a beautiful hand-made quilt to the library to encourage people of all ages to read.  Once you have read a book (or listened to one such as babies, toddlers and preschoolers), complete an entry form, and enter our raffle. Crestwood’s Annual Yard Sale

Once again a yard sale will be held, with proceeds to benefit the Freshman Class. To help make this fundraiser a success, your donations are greatly appreciated. Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser

A  benefit spaghetti dinner is being held on Feb 8 from 4-7 pm at the Garrettsville Eagles Club  in honor of Stacy Needs Steerman. Stacy is a single mom and recently underwent emergency open heart surgery. All proceeds from this dinner and raffle will go to Stacy to help defray medical costs and help her while she is off work recovering. The cost is  $7.00 for a spaghetti dinner with rolls and a salad and entry into a special drawing. There will also be a  50/50 raffle, a cash  bar and baskets of different sorts to raffle off.   To purchase tickets or make a donation please contact   Barb DiPenti at 330-388-4639.

Portage County Beekeepers Beginner Beekeeping Class

Vintage Photos of Freedom Township

The Freedom Township Historical Society will have a slideshow of vintage photos at 7 p.m. Feb. 11 at Freedom Community Center, 8940 S.R. 700. We will feature photos from the 19th and early 20th century of Freedom Township and its residents. We will also have photos of our one-room schoolhouse restoration and an update on our recent progress. We will be accepting donations for the renovation project. Refreshments will be provided.

Purple Hearts Program

Join the James A Garfield Historical Society for their February program on Monday, February 17th at 7:00 pm. Join us at the Mott Building for our Valentines Day program where Paul Brady will be discussing our local Military Purple Hearts Program. The Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to military personnel awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military. Light refreshments will be served.

Casino Trip To Benefit Area Families

The Sisterhood of St. Joseph Church is sponsoring a casino bus trip to the Rivers in Pittsburgh, PA on Monday, February 17th (President’s Day).  Cost is $40 per person and will include $20 free play and a $5.00 food voucher.  Contact Mary Ann Feddor at 330-842-0505 to reserve your seat.  Casino requires a player’s card and a valid driver’s license.  Payment in advance is essential.  The group will depart from St. Joseph Church, 11045 St. Joseph Blvd., Mantua, Ohio, at 9:00 a.m. and will return by 6:00 p.m.  There are plenty of seats available at this time, but its “first come, first served.”
