The Portage County District Library announces that fall storytime registration began August 24th at most branch libraries. You’re invited to join us for fun fall crafts, stories and other activities. Branch libraries include Aurora Memorial (330-562-6502), Garrettsville (330-527-4378), Pierce Streetsboro (330-626-4458), Randolph (330-325-7003), and Windham (330-326-3145). Free Meal

God Provides a Free Meal at Nelson United Methodist Church will be Aug 28th from 4-6pm. Dinner will include hot dogs, baked beans, coleslaw and dessert.

Awana Club Registration

Awana Club registration will start on Aug 30th from 5-6pm in the Fellowship Hall of Huntsburg Baptist Church; 16401 Mayfield Rd. Awana Club will be Wednesday nights from 6:30-8pm beginning on Sept 9th, for ages 3 through grade 6. There will be a 10% discount for pre-registered members on Aug 30th. Mantua Community Center Open

The Community Center at Mantua Center continues to be open in the old schoolhouse on Center Rd. just N. of SR82, for the usual activities every Tuesday from 9:30 until about 2:00. Special activity in this “back to school” month is sewing school bags and filling them with supplies for children in refugee camps around the world. Potluck lunch at noon; bring a dish to share. “Don’t Eat Alone” evening meal provided at 5:30, except none on Sept. first. Mark your calendar for a special opportunity on September 8th, when local art quilter Carole Pollard will have retrieved her quilts from Wayne Center for the Arts in Wooster, where they are currently on display, and will bring them to share with us.

A Course in Miracles

An astonishing set of three books that are now available in one combined volume set up in the format for a class. This study group facilitated by Dr. J. Patella will continue at the YMCA the 1st Wednesday of each month at 10:30 am. If you own a copy of “A COURSE IN MIRACLES” please bring it along. Chicken Dinner

Southington UMC (St Rt. 305 & 534, Southington, OH) will be holding a chicken dinner on September 2nd from 3:30-6. The menu includes: one fourth of a chicken, scalloped potatoes, green beans, applesauce, coleslaw, homemade desserts, beverage. Friendship Steak Fry

Youth Archery Primer

Izaak Walton League Association youth archery primer will be Sept 5th from 10-1. This will take place at 9634 Newton Falls Road, Paris Township, for free archery instruction. A hot dog lunch will be provided.

Portage County Chapter #600 of International Parents without Partners will have its monthly dance on Sept 5th from 7:30-11pm at the Ritchie Memorial Shelter House, 109 West Ave., Tallmadge. Looking for Swim Lessons for Your Children?

Look no further than Hiram College! Swim Lessons for the fall semester. Take advantage of this amazing opportunity to have your child learn a valuable life lesson. Get instruction from the colleges finest once a week for a four week period. Each lesson lasts forty-five minutes with an additional fifteen minutes for your child to gain more confidence in the water. Ages four and up welcomed. PWP Annual Picnic

Portage County Chapter #600 of International Parents Without Partners will have their annual picnic beginning at noon on September 7th at the Ritchie Memorial Shelter house Pavilion, 109 W. Ave. in Tallmadge. Members and non-members are invited to attend, please bring a covered dish to share. The chapter will furnish hamburgers and hot dogs, buns and the ‘fixings’. Swiss Steak Dinner

The Nelson UMC will be hosting their Swiss steak dinner at the Nelson Community House on Sept 12th from 4-6pm. The price is $10 for adults and $6 for kids ages 6-12. The dinner will include Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn casserole and drinks and dessert. Carry out is also available.

Annual Chicken BBQ

The Hilltop Christian Church annual Chicken BBQ will be Sept 12th from noon until 6pm. The menu includes 1/2 BBQ chicken (cooked on site by our famous pit crew), homemade potato salad, green beans and homemade pies. The Hilltop Chicken BBQ has been a part of the Potato Festival tradition since its first festival over 40 years ago. Hilltop Christian Church is located at 4572 W. Prospect St. Mantua, OH

Mantua Potato Stomp Race and Fun Run

The 37th Annual Potato Stomp race will take place on Sept 12. There is a one mile Fun Run that begins at 8:30am and the 3.5 mile and 9 mile races begin at 9am. All races start at Crestwood High School. Entry forms are available at Advanced Rehab in Mantua and online at mantuapotatostomp.com. Make Memory Wire Bracelet at the Garrettsville Library

Do you want to learn basic jewelry making skills? We will be making a “Memory Wire Bracelet” at the Garrettsville Library on September 14th from 6-7:30 pm. You must register for the class, as space is limited. Class is limited to 12 students. The class is free and all supplies are provided. There will be a refundable $5.00 deposit to reserve your space in the class. The deposit will be refunded the day of class. 2015 Balloon A-Fair Parade

Parade applications are available for the Ravenna Balloon A-Fair Grand Parade. Entries should focus on this year’s theme ‘A Flight to Remember’. All parade units must have a 2015 parade application on file. Parade line up begins at 7:00 am and the parade step off at 9:00 AM September 19th in beautiful downtown Ravenna. The All American Judges will be judging the parade. Parade entries are encouraged to stay for the opening ceremony when the parade winners will be announced. The parents of Troop #124 3rd annual Craft Show will be on Nov. 21st from 10-4. Set-up will begin at 8am. It will be held at the Newton Falls Community Center, 52 E. Quarry St., Newton Falls, OH. (Change of location from last year.) Cost for space is $25.00 which includes one 8 ft. table and 2 chairs (limited electric avail.). Each crafter will be asked to donate one item to raffle.
