As demand for joint replacement procedures continues to rise, University Hospitals Portage Medical Center is expanding advanced orthopedic capabilities designed to improve both the patient experience and outcomes.

New orthopedic expertise at UH Portage now includes the use of Mako robotic-arm assisted technology. The Mako system is an advanced innovation in orthopedic surgery transforming the way joint replacement procedures are performed.

Through the use of an interactive robotic arm, the Mako system provides surgeons with real-time visual, tactile, and auditory feedback throughout procedures. This technology ensures optimal implant placement and restores both biomechanical alignment and range of motion in affected joints.

Mako technology is used for total knee, partial knee, and total hip replacement procedures. Patients undergo comprehensive examinations by orthopedic surgeons to determine eligibility. Patients who are eligible may experience benefits including, more predictable surgical outcomes with increased accuracy, smaller incisions resulting in less scarring, accelerated recovery with reduced post-operative pain, and greater preservation of healthy bone tissue.

“What’s exciting about offering this procedure in Portage County is how personalized it is for each patient,” said Rikesh Patel, DO, Director of Robotics Surgery for Total Joint Replacement at University Hospitals. “Using advanced 3-D imaging, we’re able to create a model of a patient’s unique joint anatomy before surgery and create a plan tailored specifically to them. During the procedure, the robotic technology allows us to make real-time adjustments with incredible precision.”

With this advanced surgical technology, many joint replacement patients can walk on the same day as their procedure and patients have the ability to be discharged home on the day of surgery.

For more information about Mako robotic-arm assisted technology and joint replacement surgery, patients should consult with their orthopedic surgeon to discuss eligibility and treatment options. Mako joint replacement procedures are performed at multiple UH facilities throughout the region.
