Geauga County – The second annual University Hospitals (UH) Geauga Medical Center Tea Luncheon featuring “Bras For a Cause” will be held at Chardon United Methodist Church, 515 North Street in Chardon on Saturday, June 29th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cancer awareness and fundraising event is presented by the UH Geauga Medical Center Auxiliary.

Over 100 people attended last year’s Tea Luncheon, which raised more than $1,700 for the hospital’s UH Seidman Cancer facility. “Women joined together to share their strength and sense of humor,” says Karen Cico, Volunteer Services Coordinator, UH Geauga Medical Center. “This year we’re going to provide even more education with presentations designed to clarify the myths about cancer. We’ve invited UH Geauga Medical Center oncologists to attend and answer questions, and some of the hospital’s departments are providing educational displays. Our goal is to raise money and awareness, instill hope and support, and have fun as a community.”

The event will include a style show; door prizes; sandwiches, salads and beverages provided by the UH Geauga Medical Center dietary team; and bakery prepared by the Auxiliary. One of the highlights of the Tea Luncheon – and the biggest fundraising component – will be “Bras For a Cause.”

“Last year, 15 dazzling bras were created for the event, mostly by UH Geauga Medical Center departments,” says Cico. “This year, we’re inviting the community to participate. Any group or individual can decorate and submit a size 34C bra with a theme that is classy, sassy, funky, fabulous or a heartfelt tribute to someone who has battled breast cancer.”

The deadline for submitting a “Bras For a Cause” entry is June 10th. The bras will be displayed at UH Geauga Medical Center from June 14th through June 28th and at the Tea Luncheon on June 29th. Entries will be voted on during that time. Voting tickets can be purchased for $1 each or six for $5. The bras that raise the most money will be announced at the luncheon. “We invite area businesses to join in by pledging to match the amount raised by the community for the bra of their choice,” says Cico.

Mary Brazofsky is President of the UH Geauga Medical Center Auxiliary and a nearly 30-year cancer survivor. “The Tea Luncheon is a big event with great educational benefit for all cancer survivors, their loved ones as well as younger people,” says Brazofsky. “We want to make this event a happy time that shows our residents the hospital and the auxiliary are here to support them.”

Tickets for the UH Geauga Medical Center Tea Luncheon featuring “Bras For a Cause” are $10. Space is limited. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. on June 29th and lunch will be served at noon.
