Twentieth Century Club of Garrettsville–April18, 2024

753

The Twentieth Century Club of Garrettsville closed out its very successful club at its annual Spring Party, held on April 18 at The Cutting Board in Middlefield.
This included thanks to the ‘23-’24 officers for their services, an official inauguration of new officers( list to follow ASAP) for the ‘24-’25 year, longevity recognition to 20-year members Carol Torda and Karen Ziarko as well as 40-year member Connie Crate.

The group voted to make a donation to the James A. Garfield Historical Society in support of the time capsule opening to be held on July 6 and to which all were invited. Actually, it is quite likely that many of the club’s founding members might have been present at the dedication of the original time capsule placed in 1924.

Memorial books honoring the lives and service of members Jan Chalker and Jeanette Marvin Hall are to be donated to the Garrettsville branch of the Portage County Library.
The program for the evening was presented by Lydia Snyder, a Hiram College graduate and current professor at Kent State University. She offered fascinating music played on her Shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute, as well as insight on its place in Buddhist culture and Japanese history. The sound was resonant and haunting, fittingly associated with meditation and attuned to silence. She also told a bit about the construction of the instrument, how it is used and cared for, and other instruments that it is sometimes paired with. Fascinating.

The calendar/program committee will be meeting over the summer; the Summer Get-Together will be the next regular meeting–members will be notified as to the date and location.
