The ladies of the Twentieth Century Club of Garrettsville met on October 3 at the Eagle Creek home of hostess Joyce Fashing, who was assisted by co-hostess Karen Ziarko. The meeting was conducted by vice president Jane Hill, since the president was in Idaho–maybe snowed in. The roll call was to be answered by giving the respondent’s name as it might be in Scandinavian tradition–father’s/mother’s name plus “dottir” or “son”, or “sen”. Minutes for the previous two meetings–August 15, September 19–were read and approved. The next meeting will be hosted byConnie Crate & Jane Bell. The group took a look at some items in the recently-read by-laws, especially as regards the admission of new member procedures; it was all about modernization and accountability and definitions. There will be further discussion and later decisions on these matters. A new member was nominated and accepted to the group.
Following was a delightful program presented by Ann Rubin on Scandinavian holidays–suitably opening with International Cinnamon Bun Day and the offering of genuine Swedish Cinnamon Buns–tasty. Other festivities included the Midsummer celebration, usually including music & dancing & drinking as well as garlands and Maypole exercises. St Lucia–a Christian martyr– is the focus of the December 13 observance beginning the Christmas season. Jul Man and porridge and a Christmas gnome compete with a Jul goat and shoes to be filled with gifts. Iceland boasts some 13 Santas! The cinnamon buns and the music accompanying the presentation added to the over all effect, to the enjoyment of the entire company.
Fall-themed delicious refreshments and conversation followed. The next meeting will be on October 17.
