Ravenna – Seniors and veterans in Portage County hungry for financial guidance now need look no further than under their plates, thanks to a new initiative from the office of Treasurer Brad Cromes.
Called the “Pocketbook Placemats Program,” the effort seeks to help those in these commonly-targeted groups avoid scammers and make sound financial choices by providing easy-to-digest tips printed on placemats. The Treasurer’s Office is distributing the placemats, which are produced by the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to the Portage County Senior Center in Ravenna and to local veterans’ service organizations in communities throughout Portage County. Those organizations will then make them available to their patrons at meals and other programs taking place at their facilities.
“There is a dizzying amount of information out there on personal finance, and scammers are always on the lookout for new tricks,” Cromes said. “We believe these placemats provide strong advice on both topics in a novel way, and we are grateful to our community partners for helping us get them to people who can use them.”
The placemats come at no cost to the organizations distributing them or to Cromes’ office and are provided as part of a public financial education initiative from the Bureau. New placemats will be made available as they are produced, or as need requires.
For more information about the program, including how to participate in the future, residents and interested community groups are encouraged to contact the Treasurer’s Office by phone at 330-297-3586.
