Summer Reading Club at PCDL: Make Space for Reading This Summer!

1111

There will be a “universe of stories” awaiting children, teens, and adults at Portage County District Library’s Summer Reading Club this summer, so be ready to “blast off” by registering kids early. Registration will begin the week of May 13 at most branch libraries, with most activities beginning the week of June 3 and running through July 19. With an outer space-related theme this year, summer reading will include activities and stories involving space vehicles, astronauts, the planets, and astronomy. Learn all about the universe (as we know it so far) while continuing to read over the summer break.

It’s a little known fact that kids who don’t read over the summer fall behind their peers who do when school starts up again, and the effects of what’s been coined by professionals in the education field as “the summer slide” can last a lifetime. Among the tips to prevent this occurrence are encouraging kids to read at least 20 minutes every day and making routine visits to your local library- including summer reading programs. Kids’ attendance at such programs keeps them engaged in reading and learning while they’re out of school, which is what’s already been recommended by education experts.

As the summer reading schedule varies at each PCDL branch library, parents or caregivers are encouraged to contact their preferred branch library for specific details. Branch libraries include Aurora Memorial (330-562-6502), Garrettsville (330-527-4378), Pierce Streetsboro (330-626-4458), Randolph (330-325-7003), and Windham (330-326-3145).
