Special Meeting Scheduled In Nelson Twp. to Discuss NGCC

621

Nelson Twp. – Currently, more than 140 families in the Garrettsville area rely on the Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard (NGCC) for supplemental groceries.  In the one year that they have been open, NGCC has distributed over 34,000 food items to those in need.  “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support we have received from the community during our first year in operation” states Michelle Elias, one of the founders of NGCC.

NGCC now finds itself in the position of having to find a new location.  NGCC board member, Dan Dolan, is heading up the search and renovation team.  They have approached the Nelson Township trustees with a proposal to lease the old township garage on Nelson circle.  Since the Pixley Park garage was built, the old garage is only partially used for storage.  The board of NGCC would like to enter into a long-term low cost lease with the township for 1/3 of the garage space and in return would completely update and remodel that portion and upgrade the exterior of the building.  According to Elias, “it would be a win-win situation for the township since NGCC would incur all costs to upgrade the interior and maintain the exterior”.   If Nelson Trustees agree to the deal, The Cupboard would remain close to its current location, literally across the traffic circle, and the old garage will get the facelift and updates it needs.

At the February 6, 2013 township trustee meeting there was a difference of opinion by the trustees on what course of action to take.  However, they did agree that a special meeting to discuss only this subject should be held.

This special meeting will be held at the Nelson Community House on Feb 27th at 7:30 p.m. and is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.  Community residents are encouraged to attend the meeting to give their views.
