Rotary Eyes “Ribbon Cutting” for Boardwalk Lighting Project

808

The October 22, 2018 meeting of the Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club opened with discussion of the Boardwalk/Lighting the Falls project and its “Grand Opening”/ Ribbon-cutting. Weather considerations, scheduling influences, other events taking place all were part of the picture. Final date looks likely to be Thursday, November 1, the same as the opening of the Christmas Candlelight Walk, giving visitors and community members alike a double dose of festivity and appreciation of the village. Seven o’clock is the hour for the opening and walkers will be able to get the full effect of the Christmas Walk and the illuminated falls and bridge.

The program was presented by Norm and Joyce Fashing, whose granddaughter, Melana was the namesake of the Friends of Melana foundation who was taken from us by the terrible diagnosis of DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma), an incurable childhood cancer. The Friends of Melana Foundation has joined with the Prayers from Maria Foundation, based in Cleveland to raise over $130,000 to support research into this scourge of children. Support for fund-raising efforts has come from many sources, especially the annual run during Garrettsville’s SummerFest; this year’s presenting sponsor, KraftMaid, among others, and other local contributors and runners have been key to the success of the event. More participants, more sponsors, more helpers are always needed and appreciated. Advances in nanotechnology are beginning to be studied, other avenues of research are being pursued. The solution is out there. Just keep swimming.

The Reverse Raffle approacheth; meetings are being held tickets are being sold.

A former president, Ray Sawyer, is in need of a card. The district 6630 governor is schedule to appear next week.
