Roger A. Norton, 70, of Garrettsville, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2018. He was born on May 23, 1948 in Woburn, Massachusetts to Kenneth and Marie (Berwick) Norton. Roger married the love of his life, Elsie (Poole) Norton, on November 23, 1971.
He was a police officer, teacher and a preacher. Roger was a police officer in Garrettsville and Chief for 21 years. Then he moved on to The University of Akron where he established their Peace Officer training academy. Roger served as Academy Commander for Garrettsville/ Hiram Peace Officer Academy. He finished his master’s degree in technical education from the University of Akron in 1998. Roger then started his 3rd career as a Methodist Minister serving at the United Methodist Church of Bristolville. He then joined the prison ministry “Kairos” at Trumbull County Correctional Institute. Roger had many passions, but most important was his family.
Roger is survived by his wife of 46 years, Elsie; children, Cheryl (Barr) Hall, Carlene Barr, Constance Norton (Jeff Max), and Roger “Beau” Norton II (Laurie); grandchildren, Melissa (Joseph), Michael, Michelle, Tina, Kara, Britney, Autumn, Hannah, Landon, Carson, and Tucker: great-grandchildren, Cory, Natalie, Emily, Melody, Nathan, Kailyn, Iziah and Izabell; sisters, Robin and Mercy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Kenneth, Roland and Philip and sisters, Christine.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM with a Masonic Service at 5:30 PM at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St., Garrettsville, Ohio 44231. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 19, 2018, 11 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Fred Bell officiating. Burial followed in Park Cemetery.
