Rising Costs Challenge Shepherd’s House

52

Shepherd’s House( has released updated statistics on the number of homeless individuals utilizing the shelter. As of February 20, 2025, 52 individuals, including 2 families (6 children) and 46 single adults, have sought refuge at the Shepherd’s House. (17 of those individuals are utilizing the warming center.)   Since opening its doors in April of 2022, this is the greatest number of individuals being housed at the Shepherd’s House. A critical resource for individuals experiencing homelessness in Portage County, which is facing significant financial challenges due to rising operational costs. Increased expenses in food, utilities, staffing, and essential services have put a strain on the shelter’s ability to continue providing vital support to the community.

“Over the past year, we have seen a sharp increase in the costs of running our shelter, from the price of food and basic necessities to utility bills and staff wages,” said Anne Marie Noble, Executive Director of Shepherd’s House. “While we remain committed to serving those in need, we are now facing tough financial decisions to ensure the continuity of our services.”

The shelter has seen a 50% increase in demand for its services due to economic hardship and housing instability in the area. However, funding and donations have not kept pace with the rising costs, making it more challenging to provide meals, beds, and support programs for individuals and families in crisis.

“The numbers reflect the ongoing challenges faced by our community,” said Anne Marie Noble, Executive Director. “While we are committed to providing shelter and essential services, the rising demand highlights the urgent need for long-term solutions, including affordable housing and supportive programs.”

In response to these challenges, an extremely generous donor has pledged a $50,000 matching grant through March 1st, 2025, calling on the community, businesses, and local leaders to help bridge the funding gap. “We need urgent support from the community to continue our mission,” added Anne Marie Noble. “Every donation, large or small, will make a difference in helping people find shelter, stability, and hope.”

Shepherd’s House continues to work with local agencies, nonprofits, and government partners to address homelessness. Efforts such as providing wrap around services, transportation to job interviews, appointments on site with HESS, Job and Family Services and various mental health case managers. “Every person deserves a safe place to call home.”
