Garrettsville – This past Tuesday, the James A. Garfield High School Quiz Masters Quiz Bowl team completed their second straight undefeated season in the Portage League first division. They had to go through Hudson, Cloverleaf, Aurora, Western Reserve Academy, and Brunswick two times each to finish 10-0 in the regular season. Tuesday marked the final two matches and awards banquet dinner, hosted at JAG High School. The Quiz Masters were recognized for their undefeated season, as well as being named Very Small State and National Champions in 2022.

Senior Jack Rado was named top scorer for the league, which includes three divisions of six teams each at the varsity level. Teams range from Cloverleaf in Medina County to Lake Center Christian in Stark County. Rado captured his fourth consecutive league Player-of-the-Year. Every season he improved his points-per-game total, and this time it was over 200 a game. Rado was also the top scorer at the national tournament in 2022 as a junior.

The Quiz Masters also had some out of state success over the last weekend in January. They traveled to Glasgow, Kentucky for the Jesse Brown Invitational. Hosts Glasgow were the defending NAQT Small School National Champs. The field included multiple elite small schools from all over the country, and served as a pre-nationals tournament. There were teams from Alabama and Georgia as well. The Quiz Masters went 9-2 over the weekend, with their only losses coming to South Side, Pennsylvania and Fair Grove, Missouri. Rado was also named top individual scorer at the tournament as the team finished runners up.

The Quiz Masters have already followed up their 2021-2022 season with success this year. They will be back in action at the Portage League tournament on March 3rd, the Small School State Championships on March 11th, and the Small School National Championships in late April. The team is led by legendary coach Iva Walker.
