Portage Substance Abuse and Mental Health Conference: Navigating Critical Topics and Promoting Positive Change

The Portage Substance Abuse and Mental Health Conference will be held on October 25 from 8:30am-4pm at the NEW Center Ballroom at the Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown.

Dr. Deana Kimes, the State Medical Director of Brightview will discuss current drug trends including Fentanyl and Xylazine and treatments. Dr. Kamesha Spates from the University of Pittsburgh will discuss racial trauma and its impact on mental health. Youth-led prevention trainer Joe Markiewicz will present on how Portage County has engaged our youth as agents of positive change. Hoarding behaviors will also be a topic as presented by Chris Freeman-Clark from the ADM Board of Summit County.

The Crisis Intervention Team awards will be presented during the luncheon.

Continuing education credits are available for social workers, counselors, and clock hours for treatment and prevention professionals. Townhall II are providing the continuing education units.

The event is being sponsored by the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County, AxessPointe, Coleman Health Services, Family & Community Services, Hope Town Townhall II, Children’s Advantage, Community Health Services, Portage County Health Department, Travco Behavioral Health/First Step/Parkman Recovery, and Windsor Laurelwood.
