Portage Park District seeks public comment on 2025 projects

114

The Portage Park District is seeking public comments on 2025 park and trail projects and planning efforts to help shape future park development. Portage County residents and park users are encouraged to visit the planning page on portageparkdistrict.org to view the plans and complete the associated surveys.

Site plans have been drafted for the Towner’s Woods Park trailhead in Franklin Township and the new Kame-Esker Bog Park in Kent/Brimfield Township, both slated for construction in 2025. The timing of the Towner’s Woods project will correspond with the Portage County Engineer’s replacement of the Ravenna Road bridge and the park is expected to be closed during construction.

The Headwaters Trail Phase VIII, located on the former railroad corridor between Chamberlain Road and Diagonal Road in Mantua Township, will begin construction in 2025 thanks to a $500,000 Clean Ohio Trails grant. Headwaters Trail Phase IX has been awarded a $1,000,000 federal grant for construction to be managed by ODOT in 2028, to safely connect trail users between Phases VII and VIII with a separated side path along the road right-of-way. When completed, trail users will be able to safely travel between Garrettsville and downtown Aurora.

The Park District is exploring an opportunity to acquire an unused spur line from Norfolk Southern railroad in Franklin Township, which could extend the Franklin Connector Trail 1.2 miles east of Hudson Road where it would connect to the Park District’s Franklin Bog Preserve and the City of Kent’s proposed Lake Rockwell Trail. A conceptual map showing the location of the potential trail extension can be viewed online.

The Portage Park District’s mission is to conserve Portage County’s natural heritage and provide opportunities for its appreciation and enjoyment. For more information, visit www.portageparkdistrict.org or call 330-297-7728.
