Portage County Junior High Tournament crowns champions at Garfield

Wrestlers from across Portage County competed Friday, Jan. 2, at the Portage County Junior High Wrestling Tournament, hosted by James A. Garfield High School, with champions decided across multiple weight classes.

Tournament champions were determined through title brackets, with second place awarded to the championship runner-up. Additional placement matches were used to determine third, fourth and fifth place finishers.

At 245 pounds, Hudson’s H. Byers won the championship with a fall over Streetsboro’s Emanuel Tucker at 3:44. Streetsboro’s Cole Teuton placed third with a fall at 2:40.

Rootstown’s Reed Soika captured first place in the 205-pound division, winning the championship match by fall at 0:28. Ravenna’s Maxx Schofield finished second, while Southeast’s Corbin Brown placed third with a fall at 1:50.

In the 172-pound weight class, Crestwood’s Dylan Smith claimed the title with a fall at 0:29. Ravenna’s Luke Towne placed second, and Aurora’s Kayden Sweet earned third by decision.

Crestwood’s Cade Knopick earned first place at 160 pounds, pinning Southeast’s Brandon Shaw; Field’s Hunter Allshouse placed 3rd.

Southeast’s Cam Muzic captured the championship at 150 pounds with a fall at 2:02. Garfield’s Paul Knox finished second, and Ravenna’s Jon Kato placed third with a fall at 1:54.

At 142 pounds, Garfield’s Cam Singleton won the title with a fall at 2:33. Field’s Ellison Cole placed second, while Ravenna’s Josh Taugner earned third with a major decision (14-0).

Waterloo’s Gavin Russell claimed first place at 134 pounds, winning the final by fall at 2:01. Aurora’s Cooper Neubauer finished second, and Southeast’s Nash Truex placed third.

Streetsboro’s Legend Mazzocco won the championship at 128 pounds, earning a fall at 2:48. Field’s Mason Schlegelmilch placed second, while Aurora’s Nico Miccrotto finished third.

Crestwood’s Landon Huntington captured the 122-pound title with a fall at 4:13. Field’s Drew Holzapfel finished second, and Ravenna’s Carson Morris placed third with a major decision (12-0).

Aurora’s Alec Eaton claimed first place at 116 pounds, defeating Streetsboro’s Mason Szydlowski by 10-6 decision. Crestwood’s Brett Georger placed third with a fall at 1:18.

In the 110-pound division, Aurora’s Blake Pfenning earned the championship with a 15-8 decision. Crestwood’s Roland Maschek placed second, and Garfield’s Cuddy Colton finished third.

Southeast’s Grace Nelson captured the 104-pound title with a fall over Field’s K.J. Allen at 2:23. Streetsboro’s Kyle Barger finished third by decision (6-1).

At 98 pounds, Streetsboro’s Brandon Klimak won the championship with a 14-3 major decision. Crestwood’s Blair Hess finished second, and Crestwood’s Scott Tingler placed third with a major decision (14-3).

Crestwood’s R.J. Scott claimed first place at 92 pounds, winning the final by fall at 0:37. Streetsboro’s Brody Derry finished second, while Aurora’s Jack Kotora placed third by decision (9-2).

In the 86-pound weight class, Crestwood’s Myles Seigner earned the championship with a fall at 4:00. Waterloo’s Bentley Sikon finished second, and Rootstown’s Jackson Moss placed third.

Crestwood closed the tournament at 80 pounds, where Jacob Georger won the title with a fall at 2:24. Rootstown’s Mason Brown finished second, and Aurora’s Max Ray placed third.
