Portage County Historical Society will hold a re-dedication event

The Portage County Historical Society will host a re-dedication event for its Salmon Carter House Aug. 17.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., local officials and community members are invited to take a tour of the newly renovated Greek revival farmhouse, furnished with period items.

The house received state capital funding in recent years to get a new roof, new wiring, installation of air conditioning, leveled floors, new paint and a new alarm and fire system, said Debbie Sunderland, president of the Portage County Historical Society.

There is also now a connection between the Salmon Carter House and the Historical Society’s museum, making the buildings handicap accessible.

The Salmon Carter House was built in 1832 by one of the first-generation European settlers in the Western Reserve, Salmon Carter. The Historical Society acquired it in 1962 and has kept it in shape since then with many restoration projects throughout the years.

Sunderland said since the Historical Society was established in 1951, the organization has worked to preserve history.

“The purpose of the society is to keep records and promote the history of Portage County,” Sunderland said. “We want to keep those documents and artifacts at the Historical Society so people can reflect on their history and their family history.”

This house is just one example of the work that the Historical Society does. Their 12-acre campus is full of history, and some of their houses are available for rent.
