Every Garfield Elementary student in grades K-6 is taking part in a reading program aimed at promoting family literacy. “One School, One Book” is a program sponsored through Read to Them, a non-profit organization whose mission is to create a culture of literacy in every home.

On March 1st, a kick-off event took place that included all students and staff receiving a copy of the book Flora and Ulysses by Kate Camillo. Props and decorations relating to the book were set up throughout the hallways of school.

The program encourages students to read together at home with the school providing tools, resources, guidance, and support.

The program was introduced to JAG through Cardinal Middlefield Schools by way of parent Melissa Cardinal. Middlefield, who had already taken part in the program, “paid it forward” by donating a portion of the books they had along with the decorations. The elementary school PTO provided the funding for the remaining books needed.

Teacher Karen Ziarko and a committee of staff members took on the challenge to oversee this exciting opportunity that will conclude with a Parent Night get together from 6-7 PM on April 9th.
