Newton Twp. – The Newton Township Cemetery Association held its first meeting for 2013 on January 17, 2013, at the Township Administration Building on Arlington Road in Newton Falls.
Business was discussed and reports were given on the financial statements. The NTCA had participated in many local events in town in 2012. They held their first Cemetery Walk at the East Cemetery on North Canal Street in Newton Falls with a very good response from the community and attendees and hope to make this an annual event. They also participated in the Chili Cook-off, the Craft Show at the Community Center and also the Community Christmas. The annual fund raiser of selling calendars was done at these events and also had good response. There are 2012 calendars still available for sale which contained etches of buildings on the south side of Broad Street, businesses located there many years ago. These drawings were done by former Newton Falls art teacher, Mr. Edward Sinchak, who donated the use of them to the association. The calendars are available at Art Effects, Newton Falls Printing, Nussle Florist, and Rood’s Wallpaper and Paint Store, all located in Newton Falls.
The association has been working on the seven township cemeteries for the past few years, reading and documenting information from all of the headstones for a data base and also repairing headstones and cleaning them. This work is done strictly with volunteers and members of NTCA. For more information you may phone association president, Lois Wynkoop, at 330-872-3116 or treasurer, Elsie Whetzel at 330-872-0236. Work will resume on the cemeteries in the spring when the weather permits.
The next meeting will be March 21, 2013, at 6 p.m. At the Township Administration Building and is open to the public. For those interested in becoming a member of the association, you may phone one of the above numbers.
