Nevermind…

As Roseanne Rosannadanna used to say on Saturday Night Live after her on-air diatribe turned out to be totally misdirected–”Never mind.”

Last week’s dramatic sports moment about the Garfield PCL Championship win in 1972 was, apparently, “bass ackward”, so to speak. Hey, it was fifty years ago and I was probably somewhere on the sidelines with the cheerleaders, who were going nuts and yelling relevant things, like “Hold that line!”, over and over. Errors like that do not go unnoticed by our sharp-eyed readers and sports fanatics (That is where the term “fans” comes from in the first place, ya know.).

Anyway, here’s the play-by-play as sent to The Villager , via Carl Vasil, by an anonymous (You know who you are) sportswriter/announcer/commentator; don’t know if it came from the Record-Courier, the Plain Dealer or the New York Times. It’s even more dramatic:
“The G-Men scored first on a long touchdown pass to Bob Pohto. The 2-point conversion was good and the G-Men led, 8-0. Field scored a touchdown off a G-Man fumble but failed in their 2-point attempt. G-Men led 8-6.

The G-Man defense was stellar all season and had to hold, with 14 seconds to go in the game as Field attempted a field goal. The kick was blocked and the G-Men prevailed, to win their first PCL title. Thanks to the diving TD reception by Bob Pohto on offense and the stout, league-leading G-Man defense blocking the field goal attempt, the victory was sealed.”

Surely, someone out there will now give us a heads-up as to who it was that blocked the field goal attempt. Don’t call us, we’ll call you. Or, better yet, send it to Carl; I’m sure he’ll love to hear from you.
