Mystery Of Our History Tour

2013

Another Mystery of our History tour is coming to town!! Don’t miss this outside walking tour of the beautiful Village of Garrettsville.

The James A Garfield Historical Society has teamed up with the Garrettsville Ladies Cemetery Association and the Rotary Club of Garrettsville Hiram to bring awareness and knowledge of the need for improvement to the Baptist Cemetery. All proceeds will go to the restoration of the Cemetery.

Join us as we delve into the mysteries of some of the past residents of the village, residents who made an impact in forming the future as we know it today.

Living characters telling their stories of the life they led and what they did to make our community what it is now. From the establishing of schools to the creating of churches, from the taking over of existing businesses to the launching of new businesses. Walk with us as we see their transformation take place before our very eyes!

The special event will take place on Saturday, October 2nd. Walks will begin at the Mott Building at 10, 11 and noon. For more info, contact Debbie Smith @ 330-389-1859.

There will be four stations in all. We will start with a history lesson on some of the buildings on Main St., then move along with us as we visit the Old Vanderslice Mill, now The Mill, and learn the history of St Ambrose and meet Hart Crane. Then continue with us as we loop around to Park Ave where we will meet James A Garfield himself, learn about the past schools, including the Old Red Schoolhouse, and listen to the story of how the Methodist church got started. Last but not least, follow us as we come to the final stop, the Baptist Cemetery, meet the last person to be buried in the Dunn Mausoleum, and greet the Lansingers as they tell us about the famous Opera House and the Clock Tower.

Finish the event with a walk into the cemetery to see the positive and uplifting changes that have already taken place.

Your generous donation will be used to further improve the mausoleums and tombstones at the Baptist Cemetery. As we have brought up previously, 22 tombstones still need our immediate attention. Some are laying on the ground, broken in half, discolored by the weather or just otherwise needing repairs. Become like the past influences. Be the change! Start the month of October off right and donate to this worthy cause!
