MSFD Rescues Kayakers on Cuyahoga River

587

Mantua – At the last Fire Board meeting, Chief Matt Roosa noted that on Sunday May 7th, the MSFD team responded quickly, rescuing two stranded kayakers from the Cuyahoga River. The team was called out to the river after three kayakers capsized and were after trees across the river (referred to as a large “strainer”) separated them from their kayaks. Quick response helped them recover the two victims that were not able to get out of the river and were clutching tree branches in the icy river. Following Sunday’s event, members of the Portage County Water Rescue Team (PCWRT), along with support from the MSFD, were able to recover the 2 kayaks that were still stuck in the strainers. Before heading out on the water, especially early in the season, the PCWRT advises kayakers and boaters that scouting the river before the journey can play a huge role in your safety.

In other news, Roosa noted that the department is compiling another full-time hiring list, as the applicants on the former list were hired by other departments. He noted that the MSFD intends to hire two additional full-time team members by July.

In related news, on behalf of the MSFD, Chief Roosa thanked voters in Mantua Village, Mantua Township and Shalersville Township for supporting the Fire District’s Issue 10 EMS Levy. “Without your continued support, we couldn’t do what we do on a daily basis,” Roosa shared. “We love our community and will never take your support for granted!”

The next regular Fire Board meeting will be held on Monday, June 12th at 6 pm at the station; residents are encouraged to attend.
