Mantua – This year, trick-or-treat will take place in the Village on Sunday, October 30th from 6 – 8 pm. In addition, the Mantua Police and Fire Departments will be hosting a community event from 5 – 8 pm that night as well. The event, which is made possible by donations from local businesses, will provide drinks, treats, crafts, and goody bags for the kids. Families are invited to come meet K-9 Ciko, too. The event takes place at 4650 West High Street in Mantua.

Representing the DMRC at that night’s meeting, Phil Roth, owner of Compass Packaging and the Chilling Station asked whether any progress had been made on the Mats Road bridge. Roth mentioned an infrastructure bill currently in process and asked how the village might be able to utilize this resource.
Gene Arters from CT Consultants confirmed that according to an email he received, funding from the bill is becoming available. He noted that someone from his office was following up with ODOT to ascertain more details. At this point, it was unclear how much local funding would be necessary on a project of that scope.

In related news, Fiscal Officer Mary Ann Fabian will follow up with the DMRC for the details on the flagpole project the organization has pledged $500 to assist with. In other financial news, Police Chief Joe Urso asked Council to accept a donation of $100 from a resident for the K-9 program.

In legislation, council approved Resolution 2022-47, accepting the Portage County Budget Commission’s alternative method of apportioning and distributing the Local Government Fund. The distribution percentage received by the village will remain the same; the issue will be reviewed again in five years to give communities the opportunity to request changes if desired. Council also approved Resolution 2022-48, granting consent to the ODOT to complete bridge inspections on Mantua bridges to investigate conditions and ascertain potential repair/maintenance schedules.

Lastly, if they haven’t done so already, village residents are urged to complete an online survey conducted by the Portage County Regional Planning Commission for the village. According to Mayor Linda Clark, the information gathered in this survey will help determine whether the Portage County Commissioners can obtain grants to help our community with infrastructure needs including roads, water, and sewer systems. Visit www.surveymonkey.com/r/BLPZXLD to complete the survey online. If unable to access the survey, call Todd Peetz or Lisa Reeves at Portage County Regional Planning Commission (330-297-3613). “It only takes a minute, but it is so important that we finish the survey so we can apply for upcoming grants,” urged Mayor Clark. Clark requested that each household answer carefully and accurately; she assured that all information provided would remain confidential. She noted that residents with questions about this survey or how it will be used should contact the Portage County Regional Planning Commission at 330-297-3613, Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.

The next regular Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 18th at 6:30 pm; residents are encouraged to attend.
