Mantua – At the last regular meeting, Chief Matt Roosa informed the Fire Board that the department would be holding emergency vehicle driver training class in mid September. The education and training team from Volunteer Firemen’s Insurance Services, Inc. (VFIS) will facilitate the two-day event. This annual training exercise will include classroom work and hands-on driving training exercises, according to Chief Roosa, “ to better prepare our team when responding in an emergency situation.”
Later, Chief Roosa noted that the department has been out in at various community events this summer, including the Brat and Corn Roast at the Lutheran Church and the Summer Celebration at Mantua Center School. “Firemen and fire equipment are always a hit with kids, and the Celebration was right in line with that love affair,” Carole Pollard of the Mantua Restoration Society shared in a note to the Department after the event at the school. The fire department will be hoping for the community’s support of an EMS levy, which will be on the ballot in November.
Lastly, it was noted that the Portage County Runway Fest will once again take place at the Portage County Regional Airport. The event takes place on Saturday, September 1st from 8 am until 3 pm. The event will feature a pancake breakfast, and give kids of all ages the opportunity to walk the grounds to see airplanes, helicopters, tractors, trucks (including fire trucks), cars and bikes up close and personal. Children ages eight through 18 will have the opportunity to take to the air on a young eagle flight. Mark your calendar for this family-fun event.
The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held at the station on Monday, September 10th at 6 pm.
