Mantua – At their last Fire Board meeting, Chief Matt Roosa shared that Jeff Fall turned in his letter of resignation. The Chief noted that Fall had joined the Department in 1983 and expressed gratitude for Fall’s nearly 37 years of dedication to the Mantua-Shalersville Fire District.
In other news, Chief Roosa noted that the Department had 10 applicants for the Lieutenant exam. He noted that five full-time and five part-time firefighters were currently undertaking this endeavor. He also noted that three individuals would be taking Fire Safety Inspector classes as well. He noted that First Responder Active Shooter training would take place in March, and that several new firefighters would participate in specialized training at the Auto Show in March to learn the latest developments in automotive fuel, motor, and technology, as well as more effective ways to extract motorists from newer vehicles. The Chief noted that the experience is especially effective for newer firefighters who have had limited exposure on the road.
In other news, he shared that the department was currently seeking several grants this year. Among them are an EMS grant being submitted by Firefighter Dan King, the MARCs Radio and the Assistance to Firefighters grants, both being filed by Ken Justus. In addition, a Bureau of Workers Compensation grant is under consideration that will allow the department to purchase additional cancer prevention equipment and supplies. Lastly, Mantua Township Trustee Jason Carton noted his desire to apply for the Monsanto/Bayer America’s Farmers Grow Communities grant on behalf of the MSFD. If awarded, the grant would provide the department with $2,500 to assist in the purchase of safety supplies or equipment for department use.
The next meeting of the Mantua-Shalersville Fire District will take place on Monday, March 9th at 6 pm at the station; residents are encouraged to attend.
