Mantua – October 5th was a perfect morning in Northeast Ohio.  All those attending the Fruit and Vegetable Pie Contest at the Mantua Rotary Farmer’s Market came with smiles, looking forward to the challenge of judging.  The contest was free, and more than one pie could be entered by a contestant.

Eight beautiful pies presented themselves for the judges.  Judging started at 10:30 and all those present were welcome to participate.  Three celebrity judges were on hand to assist in the judging.  They were Police Chief Harry Buchert of Mantua, Police Chief Ed Samec of Hiram, and Lieutenant Brooke Stamm of the Mantua- Shalersville Fire Department.  The winner for the best looking pie was:1st-Dean Olson, 2nd-Anna Heritage, 3rd-Patsy Reid.  The fruit pie category winners were: 1st-Anna Heritage, 2nd-Kathleen Miller, 3rd-Patsy Reid.   In the vegetable pie contest there was a tie for first place.  It was decided to have a “taste off” to determine the winner.  The result was a first place win for Michele Stuck, second place tie for Shirley Ferris and Dean Olson.  The Grand Prize winner for the contest was Anna Heritage from Shalersville, with her sour cherry pie, it was quite evident by the fact at the end of the contest non of her pie was left, including the crust.  Free coffee was served with the event.  Anyone attending could purchase a slice of the pie, or whatever was left.  A perfect morning for a perfect village event.

The market has one Saturday left this year with a FREE Pumpkin Carving Contest Saturday October 12.  All ages are invited to attend.  There are many great items to enjoy at the market, fresh-baked cinnamon and pecan rolls, fabulous caned items, maple syrup, vegetables, apples, and more.  The market is open 9-12:30 Saturday at The Christ Lutheran Church at 10827 SR 44 in Mantua.  For more information about the market or the pumpkin contest call: 330-351-3035
