Vocabulary.com explains that one can roast a turkey by cooking it in the oven, but you can roast a friend by calling her a turkey on her birthday. To roast is to poke fun at someone as a way of honoring them.
In this season of turkeys, the Mantua Rotary has chosen to host a Roast of local community members. The event will be the season’s best, and likely most funniest fundraiser. The event takes place this Friday, November 8th at 6 pm at the Corners Catering and Event Center (11845 State Route 44 in Mantua).
The term ‘roast’ comes from an eighteenth-century use of roast which meant “an unmerciful bantering.” Comedians are known to roast each other, telling one joke after another mocking the person they’re celebrating.
At Friday’s event, six local leaders have agreed to be ‘targets’, enduring good-natured public ribbing to benefit the Mantua Rotary. Here they are in alphabetical order: community activist Edie Benner, local minister Chad Delaney, Village Mayor Tammy Meyer, MSFD Chief Matt Roosa, Crestwood School Board President Dan Tillet, and Mantua Village Police Chief Joseph Urso.
Each person will be ‘roasted’ by a few witty folks who know them well. At this event, both the audience and those being roasted will be entertained. By attending this event, you’ll also be supporting the Rotary Club, who does so much to serve the local community.
The evening includes entertainment, dinner, and dessert; for tickets, reach out to a Rotary member or visit www.mantuarotaryclub.org.
